MEASUREMENTS

WHAT IS MEASUREMENT?
• The process of comparing an unknown physical quantity with
respect to a known quantity is known as measurement.
• The known quantity is called the unit of that physical quantity.
WHAT ARE PHYSICAL QUANTITIES?
A vector quantity is defined as the physical quantity that has both directions
as well as magnitude.
quantities.
❖ For example, velocity is derived from the fundamental quantities length and time, hence it
Types of Units
There are two types of units :

Unit
Astronomical unit, AU: The average distance between the sun and the
earth about 1.49 × 10 11 m is called 1AU.
Light year: The light year is the distance travelled by light in one year.
1LY= 9.46073 × 10 15 m. or 9.46073 × 10 12 km.
PREFIXES FOR SI UNITS
In Physics we have to deal from very small (micro) to very large
(macro) magnitudes. To express such large and small magnitudes
simultaneously we use following prefixes:
WHAT IS DIMENSIONAL FORMULA?
An expression for a physical quantity in terms of fundamental quantities is known
as dimensional formula.
While writing dimensional formula we use symbols, 𝑀 for mass, 𝐿 for length, 𝑇 for
time, 𝐴 for current, 𝐾 for temperature, mol for amount of substance and 𝑐𝑑 for
luminous intensity.
DIMENSIONS OF A PHYSICAL QUANTITY
Sometimes, measured value of a quantity is different from the true value of the physical
quantity.
The difference between the true value and measured value is called error.
Error = true value - measured value
Before we discuss about errors let us understand two important
terms :
Accuracy: It is the measure of how close the measured value is to
the true value of the physical quantity (closeness of the measured
value to the true value)
Precision : It tells us about the limit to which the quantity is
measured.
LEAST COUNT
The smallest value that can be measured by the measuring instrument
is called as its least count.
