Competency
function.

 Domain and range of a rational function.

 The domain of a function fx is the set of all values for which the function is defined, and
Key the range of the function is the set of all values that f takes.
Understanding
s to be  A rational function is a function of the form fx=px/qx, where px and qx are polynomials
developed and qx≠0.
 The domain of a rational function consists of all the real numbers x except those for which the
denominator is 0. To find these x values to be excluded from the domain of a rational function,
equate the denominator to zero and solve for x.

Methodology
Introductory
Activity Priming Activity/Ask the students of restricted values/signs like No ID No entry, High Voltage,
notice anything upon going school some restricted signs and symbols

Activity Through Active learning and critical thinking, students will go to their respected groups and
(__minutes) find the connection with the priming activity and of the problem posted/ stated; Consider the
function
f(x) = x – 2 find its domain and Determine its range.
x+2
Analysis What have you felt upon associating your answer in the priming activity and given problem?
(__ minutes) What do you think is the domain/ restricted value of the given problem?
How can you solve the domain and range of a rational function?
Abstraction Show your cooperation and critical thinking in finding the domain and range of a rational
(__minutes) function.
To find these x values, equate the denominator to zero and solve for x
The range of the function is same as the domain of the inverse function

example 1:

Find the domain and range of the function y = x+3−5.

To find the excluded value in the domain of the function, equate the denominator to zero and
solve for x.

x+3 = 0 ⇒ x = −3
So, the domain of the function is set of real numbers except −3.
The range of the function is same as the domain of the inverse function. So, to find the range
define the inverse of the function.

Interchange the x and y.
x=1y+3−5
Solving for y you get,
x+5=1y+3⇒y+3=1x+5                          ⇒y=1x+5−3
So, the inverse function is f−1x=1x+5−3.
The excluded value in the domain of the inverse function can be determined byequating the
denominator to zero and solving for x.
x+5=0⇒x=−5
So, the domain of the inverse function is the set of real numbers except −5. That is, the range
of given function is the set of real numbers except −5.
Therefore, the domain of the given function is  {x∈ℝ  |  x≠−3}  and the range is  {y∈ℝ  |  y≠−5}.

Application Upon explanation of their values of the domain and range of a rational function, give some
(___minutes) boardwork and then a seatwork; answer given example no. 2 – 6.

Assessment Solves the problem through test (Pen and Paper Test)

Reinforce their skill in finding the domain and range of rational function by answering the
question:
Assignment
Find the domain and determine the range, f(x) = 14x ?
3x + 5
Refusal to believe until proof is given is a rational position; denial of all outside of our own
Concluding Activity limited experience is absurd. Annie Besant
