Core Assignment - Career Plan 2

Section 1 - Creating your BHAG

1) What is your BHAG?

To be happy, healthy, and have children with my wife which will give me a fulfilled life.

Travel the world with my wife, spend time with my family, become a recognized expert in my

field, and make a positive impact on the life of others.

The reason why this is my BHAG is because it defines me and what’s important to me.

Achieving true happiness, having good health, and building a strong family bond is a

fundamental desires of mine. Happiness is something that I will find within as it is a combination

of human experiences both negative and positive. I pay attention to my mental and physical well-

being and happiness will flow into my life. Spreading positivity to those around me will enhance

the life of those around me. I also invest in my health, because staying in shape is not only for

me but I want to be better equipped to support and care for my loved ones. I desire to have

children and spend as much time as I can with them. However, before that, I want to travel the

world with my wife for a while. Creating rich experiences and memories will add to our

happiness and long life together. On the professional level, I want to become an expert in my

field, stay dedicated, continuously improve myself, and develop the ability to stand out among

my peers. With all the things that I do in my life, I am to make a positive impact on the life of

others. It gives me a sense of purpose because I try to improve the well-being of others with my

actions and contribute to society in a positive manner. My BHAG covers the most important

aspects of my life and I pursue those hoping that it will lead to a deeply satisfying and purposeful

life.

Core Assignment - Career Plan 3

How does your BHAG align with your purpose and mission?

My BHAG aligns with my vision statement as my purpose is to live a fulfilled life, focus

on my family and make a positive impact on the life of others. My vision statement reflects my

values, passions, and aspirations that guide my actions and decisions. Those are in line with my

goals in life. My BHAG and my personal vision statement are interconnected and mutually

support each other. At the core of my vision statement is my desire to make a positive impact on

others and be a good leader in all aspects of my life both in my personal and my professional life.

While my vision statement is broader as it provides a sense of purpose and direction that

motivates me to pursue a meaningful life, my BHAG has more specific and ambitious targets

like the ones described above. All my values and passions and things that truly matter to me are

reflected in both of them. It is only normal that my BHAG and my vision statement to be aligned

as they are driven by the same short-term and long-term goals.

My mission statement serves as a guiding principle for my decision-making and helps

align my actions in accordance with my core beliefs. Having a clear mission makes me prioritize

activities that align with my purpose. My BHAG is my long-term goals and aspirations that I feel

are achievable. My personal mission represents my core values and passions that define my

existence and provide me with the bigger picture. Aligning my BHAG and my personal mission

statement means following my most ambitious dreams while staying true to my authentic self

and achieving a deep sense of self-actualization. I want to live the most fulfilled life possible and

give the best life to my family while making a positive impact on other people’s life while

staying true to my core values and passion.

Core Assignment - Career Plan 4

Section 2 - Career Vision

I am planning on becoming a project manager in the legal field. I have previous

experience and training in that field even though I do not possess a law degree. I understand that

building a project manager career is a journey of continuous growth and development. I will

have to master the core project skills such as planning, organizing, and coordinating tasks and

people. Throughout my career, professional development and continued education will be

essential to staying relevant and adapting to the ever-changing, fast-paced legal project

management practices and conditions. I understand that the project manager’s career is

characterized by a lot of moving parts that require balancing technical skills, leadership

capabilities, and understanding the organization’s objective so that I can be effective in what I

do. As a legal project manager, there are several stages of my career that I need to complete in

order to reach the pinnacle of my career. As I gain experience, the complexity level of the legal

projects will increase and I will need to ensure smooth execution and successful handling of

those projects. I want to build up a strong reputation as a skilled problem solver and efficient

project manager so that when advancement opportunities arise, I can be the best candidate for a

more senior position. Reaching the position of Director of Legal Project Management is what I

have in mind. This means that I want to become an expert in my field which is consistent with

my BHAG, vision statement, and mission statement. In this capacity as an expert my role in the

organization my goal is to aid the company to deliver exceptional legal services and maintain a

competitive edge in the ever-evolving legal landscape.

Core Assignment - Career Plan 5

My assessment results revealed that my career orientation is moderately organizational. I

believe this is an accurate assessment as it ties to my upbringing, I prefer a more traditional and

conventional approach. I don’t believe in shortcuts, everything should be earned through hard

work and dedication. I like to focus on gradual learning and acquiring expertise in my particular

field of legal project management. There is a lot to learn in this field and becoming an expert

requires meticulous work. It requires resilience, commitment, and maintaining high-quality work

at all times. By excelling in this career as a result of continuous development and learning I can

have a significant impact on the success of the organization and contribute to the growth and

reputation of the company I represent. I don’t see myself as an entrepreneur, but I take pride in

my work and my dedication to my principles and core values are unquestionable. I feel that I

could be a great addition to any organization.

My career as a legal project manager would involve a continuous progression within my

role and in the organization. As I described above there is a natural progression of such careers

front entry-level, to mid, to expert. While this path requires a lot of work and can be rewarding,

if things don’t as planned, I might desire to explore an alternative career path. My reason could

be from finding something that I more fitting to my personal interests or from the desire to

change responsibilities. As I enjoy independence and I am very self-reliant in my work and a

career alternative would be management consulting. Through this option, I would be able to

apply my project management expertise in a broader context. I would use my expertise to work

in various industries and help organizations to solve project management problems, improve

their processes and improve their operations. This type of work would allow me to work

remotely which would translate into more flexible hours and better work-life balance. While I

have no problem working regular work hours, if given the possibility to set my own work hours,

I would enjoy the benefits of setting my own working hours as long as I meet the project

milestones and reach the desired results.

Section 3: Long-Term Strategy

The interim steps or milestones that I have laid out are as follows:

1. Complete my bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership. August 2023.

2. Find an entry-level project management job. September-October 2023.

3. Acquire practical experience in project management in the legal sector or other

industries. End of the year 2023 until 2025.

4. Obtain relevant certifications such as PMP or CLPM. These certifications will

demonstrate my expertise and commitment to the field. During the year 2024.

5. Transition from Junior Legal Project Manager to full-fledged Legal Project Manager.

2026-2027

6. Work on developing excellent communication and leadership skills to reach senior-

level position. Understand how to leverage technology tools and software used in legal project

management. 2028-2030

7. Move up to Senior Legal Project Manager in a big law firm. Handle more complex

high-profile projects, overseeing a team of project managers. 2030-2032

Core Assignment - Career Plan 7

8. Become the Legal Project Director. Lead the entire legal project management team

within the legal department of Nike. 2033-2035

9. Director of Legal Operations. Focusing on optimizing legal workflow and using the

best technology to offer the best project management capabilities. 2040

10. Semi-retire and work as Legal Consultant for Nike. Continue to offer legal project

management expertise to the company as a consultant. 2043 until 2050.

As strategic moves between my career management and work-life integration as a

husband and as a future father, I am planning on taking several different actions. Prioritization is

one of the most important strategies that I can take. I will allocate time and energy to tend to

family needs and spend time with my wife and children to strengthen family bonds. I will

identify my priorities and give more importance to what matters the most. Balancing my family

time and my work life is crucial. To do all that I have to be great at time management, by setting

boundaries between work and family life. I will utilize the available time management

techniques to ensure that I dedicate sufficient time to both family and work alike. Goal alignment

ensures that my career goals and family duties are aligned as they complement my family values

and long-term vision. Being honest and open about communicating my career aspirations and

work demands with my wife and my family will help keep the balance between my family and

my work duties. If I am able to convey how will integrate my work obligations and professional

progression with my family obligations I can get support from my family, but I will also spend as

much as time possible with them. I will always prioritize family over work. As I progress in my

career, I will perfect on delegating more tasks to others and use my time to supervise which

would also take away some of my responsibilities, which would open up more time to do other

things. Periodic assessment of how my career and family time fit together will give me an

updated picture of what works and what needs to be changed. When circumstances change, I will

adjust my plans to best adapt to these new challenges or opportunities. Achieving a successful

work-life integration is a continuous process and it requires a lot of work, adaptation, and

understanding from all parties.

Section 4: The 1-2 Year Plan

1. Goal One - Travel the World with my Wife

One of my specific BHAG goals is to go on a world tour travel with my wife. We have

picked about 20 countries from all around the world with some wiggle room for some extra ones

if our budget allows for it. We both love to travel and before we start a family and have small

children we want to complete our bucket list. We share this passion for discovering new cultures,

trying new foods, and enjoying various landscapes. Embarking on a journey to travel the world

with my wife has the potential for us to create some lifelong memories and strengthen our bond.

For a successful travel execution, I chose to employ the SMART goals-based approach.

• Specific: Traveling the world itself is very specific. It reflects our desire to explore

diverse cultures, taste different cuisines and stare at amazing buildings and landscapes.

Our shared dream to discover the world will make our relationship stronger and the

memories we make will last a lifetime.

• Measurable: We aim to visit 20 countries on 6 different continents including a trip to

Antarctica. We have budgeted for each country depending on how expensive these

Core Assignment - Career Plan 9

places are. We made plans for specific organized and self-directed trips in each of the

countries. We also have friends or relatives in some of the destination countries

therefore, we can potentially save some extra money which will allow us to spend more

elsewhere or add another destination if it fits in our 90 days timeframe.

• Achievable: Our travel plans are meticulous, very well-detailed, account for unexpected

changes, and are organized with care. Exploring various travel routes, budget

requirements, and the allocated timeframes for the completion of each visit will ensure

that we stay within our resources and power to complete those trips. Adjustments will be

made as the situations require them.

• Relevant: This major travel plan is very relevant for both of us and it represents our

shared values, interests, and inspirations. Discovering the world together and spending

time in foreign countries outside of our comfort zones will forge our relationship even

stronger. It will be a testament to our commitment to enjoy life and to have fun.

• Time-Bound: This element relates to the timeframe of the trip which we have already

established being 90 days long. The start date will be January 7, 2024, with the

anticipated end date on April 7, 2024. These dates will help us plan our finances, make

necessary budget adjustments, manage our trip lengths and enjoy every possible moment

to the fullest.

Applying the SMART strategic framework will ensure that our world tour will be well-

organized and deeply fulfilling. Developing a detailed action plan, and having to facilitate goals

and steps required to accomplish my/our goals will make things go in a controllable manner.

2. Goal 2 - Becoming an Expert in Legal Project Management

Becoming a legal project management expert is a journey that requires dedication, hard

work, continuous learning, networking, and practical experience. By following a well-established

action plan, and proving myself as a skilled legal project manager I can reach the height of my

profession which will place me at an expert level. Using the SMART strategy I plan to act in

accordance with the next steps:

• Specific: My goal is to become an expert in legal project management. This requires

mastering the knowledge and skills related to effectively managing legal projects. My

specific goals will include understanding the challenges and requirements related to this

profession in order to become the best that I can be.

• Measurable: My progress will be measured by completing specific milestones in a

certain order that will ultimately help me reach the expert level. Obtaining the relevant

certifications, managing a high number of different difficulty-level projects, and

gradually learning the ins and outs of legal project management will help me master this

profession.

• Achievable: To achieve my goal I will dedicate a lot of time to learning and practicing

legal project management practices. I will research the best practices, obtain the best

credentials, spend time with the right mentors and specialists, and ask for feedback from

colleagues and supervisors on my project management skills to achieve the highest level

of proficiency.

Core Assignment - Career Plan 11

• Relevant: Becoming the best in my chosen field is highly relevant to my career

aspirations. Being the most efficient legal project manager, providing the most

competitive services, and meeting clients' expectations is where I want to shine. That is

where I want to place relevance and then my reputation will precede me as one of the

best experts in my field.

• Time-Bound: The timeframe that I would like to allocate to achieve expert level is for

the next 5 to 7 years with frequent position promotions. It will be a gradual process and

although it sounds like a long time, I prefer to do this in-depth and acquire all the

necessary skills to be the best in my profession. My focus and commitment to my goal

will remain unchanged until I reach it. The time frame that I set will serve as a

motivation for consistent progress.

Becoming a legal project manager expert can be achieved by using the SMART strategy.

Having a structured approach to realizing my goal and ensuring that my efforts are purposeful,

will lead me down the reach where success has my name attached to it.
