Personal BHAG

I’m currently 43 years old. My BHAG covers my personal, educational and career goals.

By the age of 45, I have my master’s degree in Human Resources and Employment Law from

Arizona State University – Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law.

By the age of 50, I am a Partner Relations manager at Starbucks Coffee Company supporting the

West Coast.

By the age of 55, I am the director of Partner Relations at Starbucks Coffee Company supporting

West Coast.

By the age of 60, I am the Vice President of Partner Relations at Starbucks Coffee Company

supporting West Coast people leaders.

By the age of 68, I am retired and traveling around the world.

My life goals align with my personal vision statement through continuing to keep pushing myself

to continue to grow always.

learning. These goals are designed to ensure I am growing in all aspects of life, which is my

mission statement.

Career Vision

Career Evolution

As a senior partner (human) resources associate with Starbucks Coffee Company, my role is

considered to be an individual contributor. This means I am professional without people leader

responsibilities who contributes to the organization independently to help support its goals and

mission and that I am solely responsible managing my individual work. My career vision is to

evolve into a people leader role that manages other people but still allows me to incorporate my

values of independence, leadership, autonomy, and growth.

Type of Career

My career will encompass a little bit of both organizational and protean. I enjoy the organizational

aspect in that there is a clear career progression path to get to get major milestone point as far as

roles that I want to hold within the organization. However, it will also have aspects of protean in

that it will allow me the independence and flexibility to lead my team in that way that I feel best

represents us with still meeting the organizational goals.

My intention is to stay with Starbucks Coffee Company long-term as another value for me is

stability and security. I have been with Starbucks Coffee Company for six years and I feel it offers

me the best opportunity to grow as I am familiar with the organization, understand how my work

contributes the overall success of the business, have established and trusted relationships with key

partners (people) and established a great network of other human resources professional.

Career Movement Up

Being an individual contributor for all of my career I am ready to move to the next step into a

leadership role. My career goals will allow me to move up progressively in the organization of

Starbucks Coffee Company with the Partner Relations business unit. Starbucks Coffee Company

has a very specific way a partner (employee) can move from one position to another position within

the same business unit and majority of the time you cannot skip steps. I will follow use their career

progression guidelines to navigate my way from an individual contributor to a people leader role.

Flexible Work Options

My career plans are flexible work options. I work better and more efficiently when working

remotely from home versus going into the office. This saves me commuting time and money that

I do not have to spend on gas and lunch. I highly value my independence and I like to have the

freedom to complete my work how and where that works best for me. And mainly, I enjoy

traveling. So, if that means I want to work on the beach somewhere, that needs to be available to

me. The other flexible work option is unlimited paid time off. I want that for others if they value

that as well. I understand that not everyone is wired that way but should be an option if that is their

preference for fulfilling their own life goals.

Long-Term Strategy

BHAG - By the age of 45, I have my master’s degree in Human Resources and Employment Law

from Arizona State University – Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law.

Aspirations

My personal aspirations is to excel and complete my master’s program which will make me the

first generation to have their master’s degree in my family. It will also give me the educational

credentials that I need to be a people leader.

Milestones

1. Apply and be accepted for my online master’s program in Human Resources and

Employment Law in the summer of 2024.

2. Start master’s program in Human Resources and Employment Law in the fall of 2024.

3. Complete 4 courses each semester with a 3.0 grade or better.

4. Graduate with my master’s degree in Human Resources and Employment Law in the spring

of 2026.

The Way Life Will Be

The reason for this goal is to place me in a better position to move into a people leader role at

Starbucks Coffee Company. One of the requirements to be in a people leader role is to have a

master’s degree in the related field. Once I have my master’s degree it will allow me to move

forward with applying for people leader roles in the Partner Relations business unit within the

Partner (Human) Resources organization.

supporting the West Coast.

Aspirations

My personal aspiration is to lead, inspire and challenge others to get the most out of their career

experiences. I also want to help develop partners (employees) and support them in their own

individual personal and professional goals.

Milestones

1. Partner with a mentor that is in similar role of leadership in the Partner Relations business

unit.

2. Establish leadership tasks in partnership with my mentor that I can do in my individual

contributor role that would prepare me for the next level.

3. Apply for manager roles.

4. Schedule monthly check-in connects with my mentor to go over leadership skills progress.

5. Take 2 online leadership courses per month that’s offered by Starbucks Coffee Company

until all courses are completed.

6. Take on leadership responsibilities such as leading Talent and Performance discussions.

The Way Life Will Be

As a Partner Relations manager, I will be leading my team to ensure we are meeting our team and

organizational goals. I will be partnering with them to find better ways to support our retail partners

and leaders in finding solutions to resolution of workplace issues.

Aspirations

As the director of Partner Relations, I will paly a crucial role in shaping the teams and organizations

success.

Milestones

1. Take courses to develop specific skills that will allow me to thrive in the role such as:

Strategic Decision-Making, Analytical, Risk Management skills and par them will the OGL

knowledge that I’ve learned.

2. Take on additional responsibilities to develop skills at the director level.

3. Establish a mentor in a director role.

4. Apply for director roles.

5. Have regular check-in connections with mentor to discuss progress.

The Way Life Will Be

As a director of the Partner Relations team, I will be part of a larger director group in which we

will collaborate with each other to align on how to meet department goals. I will be a leader that

my managers (direct reports) look to for entrusted decision making and advice.

Company supporting West Coast people leaders.

Aspirations

As a Vice President of Partner Relations, I will be able to lead on a bigger scale of leading

departments not just people. I will be able to have more impact overall on the strategic goals for

the department.

Milestones

1. Graduate with my master’s degree in Human Resources and Employment Law in the spring

2026.

2. Connect with and establish a network of Vice Presidents in the field of Partner Relations.

3. Review and understand the job description of a Vice President of Partner Relations to

ensure I meet the requirements.

4. Apply for a Vice President of Partner relations role.

The Way Life Will Be

As a Vice President of Partner Relations, I will joining the senior leadership team that works

directly with the CEO of Starbucks Coffee Company establishing a holistic strategy for

accomplishing goals to advance the company’s mission. I will be communicating company goals

with my directors, evaluating performance reviews, approving and managing team budget,

designing management strategies, and implementing business initiatives.

BHAG - By the age of 68, I am retired and traveling around the world.

Aspirations

My aspirations is to retire at the age of 68 so that I can travel whenever and however long I want

without having to get back to work after a particular time frame. At the end of the day, I want to

enjoy the fruits of my labor for the rest of the days of my life.

Milestones

1. Contribute the max distribution to my 401k retirement plan so that Starbucks Coffee

Company will match my contributions.

2. Establish a debt free plan to have all debts paid off by retirement age of 68 by end of year

2025.

3. Establish a financial advisor to ensure that I’m on the right path for retirement by end of

year 2025.

The Way Life Will Be

In my retirement life, I will be debt free and living the life! I will be traveling solo and with family

and friends whenever they are available. I will be immersing myself and learning the ways of other

cultures that align with my mission of always learning and growing.

1 - 2 year plans

1 Year Plan

S – I will establish a network of leadership professionals to be able to learn from and lean on to

help build my leadership capabilities.

M – I will join the Lake Washington Mentorship Program through the Society for Human

Resources Management (SHRM).

A – This goal will challenge me as it is an additional time commitment that I will have to ensure I

give my full attention and dedication to so that I am taking full advantage of the program.

R – Time management will be key in accomplishing this goal but I have been very good at time

management just throughout my education journey so I know it can be done.

T – I will accomplish this goal by the end of 2025.

2 Year Plan

S – By the age of 45, I have my master’s degree in Human Resources and Employment Law from

Arizona State University – Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law.

M – I will complete all courses that is required to complete my graduate program with at least a

3.0 or better.

A – This goal will challenge me to push beyond my comfort zone when it comes to my education.

R – I will continue to use my current study habits of studying everyday for each course. I will keep

my early work schedule of 6am-2:30pm which will allow more time in the day to study without

having to stay up too late to do homework.

T – I will complete this goal by Spring of 2026.

I will utilize several tools to track my 1 and 2 year plans. The first is to use the 100-Day Goal

Journal which is designed to break down the 100 days into 10 day increment with micro goals. I

will utilize 6 of these over the 2 year plan. I will have a morning and evening check in with a

recognition for the things that I am grateful for, what went well, and what I’m struggling with. The

second tool is a day timer with the significant goals entered in for the two years. I intend to meet

with my mentor through the Lake Washington Mentorship program along with my mentor within

my organization at Starbucks Coffee Company. I have several strong women in my life that I will

utilize to challenge me and my goals. I will meet with them at least once a month.
