Respect for elders

Respect for one's elders is traditional in


the Philippines. When a Filipino child
meets an older family member, the
youth customarily greets them with a
gesture called mano po, taking the
older relative's hand and placing it on
his or her own forehead to express
profound respect for the elder.
Cheerful personality

Filipinos are generally joyful. We know


how to make fun. Happiness, real and
genuine happiness, is the essence of a
life well lived. The struggle towards
happiness doesn’t end with lots of
bank deposits and high earning
investments, a thriving career or
entrepreneurial success. Careers are
small parts of large lives. Some of the
happiest people we may have
encountered don’t care for or about
their careers at all.
Self sacrifice

Known for their enduring and close


family ties, Filipinos always put their
family first. Thus, self-sacrifice is a
common trait for Filipinos, as they're
willing to endure hardships to provide
a better life for their family.
Bayanihan

In the Philippines, the Bayanihan spirit


is one of communal unity, helping
others without expecting rewards, to
achieve a certain goal. In earlier days,
when houses were made of lighter
materials such as coconut leaves,
Bayanihan also meant helping one's
neighbours move their house —
literally
"Bahala na" Attitude

"Bahala na” Attitude “Bahala na” is the


Filipino version of the famous line
“Hakuna Matata”.. Which means “No
worries". Bahala Na is a Filipino attitude
that expresses courage and faith in
God. It means to let go and let God. It
has always been an expression of
optimism.
Colonial Mentality

A colonial mentality is the internalized


attitude of ethnic or cultural inferiority
felt by people as a result of
colonization, i.e. them being colonized
by another group. It corresponds with
the belief that the cultural values of
the colonizer are inherently superior to
one's own
Mañana habit

“Mañana” is the Spanish word for


“tomorrow.” The mañana habit refers
to Filipinos' tendency to procrastinate;
in other words, they like to put off “for
tomorrow” an important task that they
should actually be doing today. Hence,
they usually end up “cramming” or
rushing when the deadline draws near.
Ningas kugon

Ningas-kugon is lack sustained


perseverance. It also means a
tendency among individuals to start a
new venture or task with too much
enthusiasm and effort, but after some
time will take a pause or will suddenly
stop working, until such time that they
lose interest in the venture or task.
Leaving things incomplete.
Pride

Most Filipinos hold on to their pride as


if they are more precious than keeping
a good relationship with family and
loved ones. When two parties are not
in good terms, they find it so hard to
apologize and wait until the other
parts asks for an apology first.
Crab mentality

Immediately offering unwanted


criticism/negative comments after
someone is successful. Inability to offer
praise or congratulations in response
to someone else's success. Lack of
compassion when others are
struggling. Feeling threatened when
others are growing and achieving their
goals
Filipino time

It is common for Filipinos to arrive an


hour or two hours after the designated
time. This is commonly referred to as
'Filipino time'. However, Filipinos will
observe punctuality in a formal
context such as important business
meetings, appointments or when
visiting the doctor.
Politics

The Political Self explores how social and


economic contexts profoundly affect the mental
health and well-being of a person. In this lesson,
the topics shall focus on how the political self
could establish a Filipino identity and how society
shapes the characteristics of people.
The Meaning of Politics
§ The word politics is derived from Greek
word Politiká which is etymologically defined
as ‘affairs in the cities’.

§ Politics is the process of making decisions


that applies to all members of a group. It is
the ability to govern and control over a group
of people in a community, state, or nation.

§ It can be inferred from this new that a


person’s ability to influence others by making
a decision for them is one of the essential
qualities in one’s political self.
In 1955, Deutsch and Gerard studied and analyzed the
motives of social influence. They can determine two types of
social influence:

1.NORMATIVE INFLUENCE: This type of social influence is based


on conforming to the positive expectations of others; people
tend to avoid behaving in ways that will lead to social
punishment or disapproval

2.INFORMATIONAL INFLUENCE: This type of influence is based


on accepting the information obtained from others as
evidence of reality (Hewstone, et. Al., 2015).
Leadership is the process by which certain group members
motivate and guide the group (Myers, 2015).

Leadership style is a pattern of leadership beahaviour which


is repeatedly shown as evident across a variety of situations. It
can be classified as follows:
1.Autocratic leadership is a leadership that is directive, non-
participative, and domineering.

2.Democratic leadership is a leadership that is participative,


communicative, and egalitarian.

3.Laissez-faire is hands-off leadership, with few attempts


made to influence others.
With regards to what leaders and followers offer to one
another, the following are the leaders’ descriptions:
1.Transactional leaders are leaders who focus on the proper
exchange of resources, who give followers something in
exchange for something the leaders want.

2.Transformational (charismatic leaders) are leaders who


focus on aligning the group or organizational goals with the
followers’ need and aspirations by developing an appealing
vision (whereby organizational needs are placed above self-
inetrest).

3.Laissez-faire leaders are those who engage in ‘non-


leadership’ that is they avoid making decisions, hesitate in
taking action and are often absent when needed
