To simplify the calculations for the areas and centroids in the moment diagram,
we break it down into parts using shapes that are easier to solve

MOMENT DIAGRAM BY PARTS

1. Complete to load diagram (solve for the reaction at the supports)
2. Set a fixed point (which will be convenient when solving for the areas
between points in the moment diagram, and the distances of their
corresponding centroids)
3. Construct the moment diagram by parts (for each load). Plot the
corresponding moment at the fixed point due to each load
AREA MOMENT METHOD
POINTS TO CONSIDER

For cantilever beams, the deflection of points within the beam can be
obtained by taking their corresponding deviations with respect to the
tangent line drawn from the support

POINTS TO CONSIDER

For simply supported beams that are loaded symmetrically, its maximum
deflection occurs at midspan. The maximum deflection is equal to the
deviation of the end support of the beam from the tangent line drawn from
the midspan
