ASSIGNMENT 1 (part 2)

Question 1 (28 marks)

Figure 1 shows a single-phase AC-AC controller with an RL load.

Figure 1

(a) In a same graph, illustrate (with a proper labelling) the following waveforms of
the controller above:
(i) the supplied voltage, vs
(ii) the output voltage, vo
(iii) the output current, io

(b) The waveform of io has the following equation:

where Vm is the amplitude of vs, α is the delay angle, and β is the extinction angle.
(i) Calculate load impedance, Z, and its phase difference, θ.
(ii) State the reason why β ≤ α + π.

(c) Assume that the above controller produces rms value of output voltage,
Vout,rms = 115 V, and rms value of fundamental output voltage, V1,rms = 103.5 V.
Calculate the voltage Total Harmonic Distortion (THDv).
(4 Marks)

(d) Assume that the above controller produces current Total Harmonic Distortion
(THDi) = 10% with magnitude of the fundamental output current, I1,peak = 4 A and
the load impedance, Z = 8 Ω. Determine the total power absorbed by the load,
assuming no power loss in the controller.

Question 2 (25 marks)

A buck converter, as shown in Figure 2, is designed to deliver a 5 V output voltage from

an input voltage that is nominally 9 V but can vary by ±1.5 V. The output current is in the
range 0.1 A to 2.0 A. The switching frequency is 250 kHz.

Figure 2

(a) Calculate the range of duty-cycle required.

(4 Marks)

(b) For operation at nominal input voltage, estimate the output voltage ripple.
(8 Marks)

(c) Prove that the converter will still remain in continuous conduction across the full
operating range.
(7 Marks)

(d) Consider that the semiconductor devices used in the converter are not ideal. The
diode has a forward voltage drop during conduction, vx(on) of 0.7 V. The switch used
is a MOSFET with an on-state resistance, RDS(on) of 200 mΩ. Estimate the power
loss in the converter at maximum output current and nominal input voltage.
