Q.1 The ON state voltage drop of the controlled static switch as shown 1
in Fig. 1 is 1V. Its forward leakage current in the OFF state is
1mA. It is operated with a switching frequency of 2kHz and at a
duty cycle of 0.6.

Fig. 1
(a) Neglect the transition loss and determine the peak and average 2 1
power dissipations in the switch. Also determine the proportion in
which these losses are shared between On state and OFF state.
(b) It the turn on time of switch is 10μs and turn off time of switch is 3 1
50 μs
(i) sketch the waveform of the load voltage and switch voltage.
Also determine peak blocking voltage capability of the switch.
(ii)Determine the average and peak power dissipation in the
switch.
(iii) Determine the overall efficiency of power conversion.
Q.2 In a non-ideal static switching device, the current and voltage 5 1
values during the switching transitions follow parabolic laws as
stated by the following equations:
= ( ) , = ( ) for the ON transition
= ( ) , = ( ) for the OFF transition

Assume that the static performance of the switch is ideal. Derive

an expression for the switching power loss at a frequency of f Hz.

Q.3 (a) For the single phase half wave rectifier shown in Fig. 2 find out 1 1
the VRRM rating of Diode D.
Fig. 2

(b) What is the required VRRM rating e if an inductor of 5mH is placed 1 1

between the diode and capacitor.
(c) What is the required VRRM rating if the capacitor is removed. 1 1
Assume a resistive load.
(d) The source of the single phase rectifier circuit has an internal 2 1
resistance of 2 Ω. Find out the required Non repetitive peak surge
current rating of the diode. Also find the i2t rating of the protective
fuse to be connected in series with the diode.
