IMPROVED FAUNA WITH MACHINE LEARNING
The Danish company FaunaPhotonics has designed a technol-
ogy platform which combines information about insects using
a machine learning algorithm and a patent-protected sensor to
differentiate among insects groups. The platform helps farmers
in understanding and securing insect diversity and to control pest
insects and insect borne diseases. Using the technology farmers
can e.g. see when bees are flying in their fields and thereby re-
duce their level of spraying with pesticides. Overall the technology
helps farmers to become more precise and effective when using
pesticides and the result is an improved fauna and lower possibil-
ity of resistance build-up within the insects.

ADVANCED AGRICULTURE WITH AI

The Danish Technological Institute has worked closely with com-
panies within environmental technology to develop tools and
methods to be used for the digitization of danish agriculture. It
has i.a. resulted in the commercial product, InfoGrow, which the
institute sells to nurseries.
The institute also investigates how artificial intelligence and cam-
era technology can make agriculture more efficient and a natural
part of agricultural equipment. Here the specialists have i.a. de-
veloped a digital plant counter that can count plants and calculate
leaf area. A solution that can save working hours.
The new initiatives are all steps by the Danish Technological Insti-
tute towards the digitization of danish agriculture with the overall
goal of reducing agricultural emissions by 70 percent by 2030.

DENMARKS NATIONAL STRATEGY FOR
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Denmark is to be In March 2019, the Danish Government published a National Strategy for Artifi-
cial Intelligence (AI) with the overall ambition to make Denmark a front-runner
a front-runner
in responsible development and use of AI. The strategy puts forth four objec-
in responsible tives:
development and

• Danish researchers should research and develop AI.
intelligence.
• Danish businesses should achieve growth through developing and using AI.
• The public sector should use AI to offer world-class services.

Benefits for individuals, businesses and society as a whole

Artificial intelligence offers great opportunities for creating growth, prosperity
and excellent public service. Therefore, the strategy seeks to create a frame-
work for companies, researchers and public authorities that allow them to ex-
ploit the potential of AI with a high level of responsibility.

Already today, international tech companies recognise Denmark as an AI hot-

spot and the go-to place for leading research, talent and innovation along
with good business ethics and trust. The new strategy significantly boosts the
framework for doing business within AI through specific new initiatives.

The initiatives of the strategy

The strategy’s initiatives fall within four focus areas that will help ensure that
the work on artificial intelligence has an ethical basis with access to good data,
strong competencies and new knowledge. Furthermore, to improve the possi-
bilities for investments in the technology.

In order to boost the work on AI in Denmark and gain more experience with
the technology, specific objectives are also formulated in four priority areas:
energy, health, utilities, agriculture and transport.

CASE: DANISH IMPRINTS FOR STANDARDS IN AI

The European Commission chose Denmark to lead the work of setting

common European requirements for the use of AI in the future. The
Danish Standards Foundation who has worked to set common European
standards for AI for several years will lead the work. The new standards
of AI must help to ensure a responsible link between technology and hu-
mans and the ethical use of data and algorithms.

In general, Danish employees are tech-savvy and ready for the digital trans-
formation. Moreover, Denmark has a small, open economy and many Danish
companies compete in export markets, which means they need to stay ahead
on the digitalisation curve.

Tech companies located in Denmark are not only able to profit from the high
level of education in Denmark, but also from the long-standing tradition of
user-driven design and innovation as well as close relationships with custom-
ers. This makes Denmark the perfect backdrop to develop new, innovative us-
er-driven AI technologies and solutions.

Denmark’s long tradition within data gathering and data management in the
public sector also gives companies a competitive advantage when building AI
solutions for a variety of sectors.

DANISH AI PROJECTS

EARLY DIAGNOSIS OF CANCER AT ODENSE UNIVERSITY

HOSPITAL SAVES LIVES
The Region of Southern Denmark is working on using AI to
diagnose cancer more quickly. By analysing pictures of cancer
cells, AI can see whether a cell is cancerous with a high degree
of certainty. Early diagnosis makes it possible to commence
treatment faster, and thereby improve patients’ chances of
survival. The work is part of a larger initiative in the area at
Odense University Hospital.

OPTIMISATION OF THE DRINKING WATER SYSTEM IN

THE CITY OF AARHUS
Production, treatment and distribution of drinking water
demands a lot of energy, which is expensive and bad for the
environment. Using AI the CHAIN project being funded by
Innovation Fund Denmark will analyse large volumes of wa-
ter-consumption data (from sensors etc.) to minimise energy
consumption on pumping water. This could also reduce the en-
vironmental impact of operating the water system.

BAGGAGE AT COPENHAGEN AIRPORT

In 2018, 30.3 million passengers went through Copenhagen
Airport. This was an increase from 21.5 million in 2010. More
passengers means more luggage. Since 2016, Copenhagen
Airport is using AI to optimise luggage handling. Among other
things, AI predicts when the staff can clean the aircraft and put
cases on conveyor belts. Focus is on time optimisation. This has
resulted in fewer queues and better passenger experience.

AI WILL HELP WITH BEER TASTING AT CARLSBERG

1,000 different beers are screened every day at the Carls-
berg laboratory in Valby near Copenhagen. It is a difficult
and time-demanding process. Therefore, researchers at the
laboratory have launched a project to measure taste aromas
before brewing the beer. The laboratory uses chemical sensors
to test thousands of different types of yeast. Data from the
yeast types will be analysed using AI, and then researchers will
be able to predict whether a yeast has the right quality. In the
future, it is likely that the technology could also measure other
food, air pollution, etc.

doing ground-breaking research and solutions within areas such as
data clustering, outlier detection and predictive modelling.

HUMAN CENTRED AI
All research groups, who conducts research within AI at Danish
universities, focus on how to make the development of AI more
human centred. They conduct research on how AI comes to its AI
decisions, how it impacts those affected by it, and how to make sure
that privacy is not compromised. They also try to address the need for
developing strong technical competencies to generate new types of
interaction between people and software.

WHAT DO THE COMPANIES SAY?

MICROSOFT

“The major advantages of having Microsoft’s largest develop-

ment centre in Europe located in Denmark are that we have ac-
cess to a broad range of highly competent Danish and foreign
staff and that we are able to build upon the Danish tradition
we have for design and management”

Charlotte Mark, CEO Microsoft Development Centre, Copenhagen.

CACTUS

“CACTUS has taken several steps to establish itself as a leading

provider of machine learning and AI-driven solutions. I am
very excited about this opportunity to work with the UNSILO
team and further scale up the Cactus Labs team. For the next
5 years, our vision is to create technologies and products that
will transform work through augmentation and automation.”

Nishchay Shah, Chief Technology Officer and Head of Cactus Labs,

CACTUS.

MOVEBIS

“We saw an exciting opportunity in Denmark for our company

to grow, as the people are very open for digital solutions. It
is easy to set up business, easy to get in contact with decisi-
on-makers and easy to recruit top-level talent. All of which is
especially important when building a tech-company and de-
veloping innovative products such as Themisi. And while 2020
has been a build-up year, we are looking forward to getting
our products on the market in 2021.”

Till Helmbold, CEO, Movebis.

DMI’s Free Data is accessible via the Danish government’s IT GovCloud

solution, which is a safe and reliable distribution platform that can
manage various forms of realtime weather data.
