Required Minimum Travel of Boss
1 ACCORDING TO N K RULE I
11th June. 1996 Prepared.
3'3
Notes :
M
_I
Clean the inner cone part of the propeller boss and outer surface of
propeller shaft.
Fit M Nut to the propeller shaft and screw i t until its bearing face comes
into contact with the aft end of the propeller boss.
Attach a thermometer to each of the propeller boss and the propeller shaft.
Fit packings and connectors in the boss expansion oil port in the aft end of
the propeller boss and the push-up oil port in the outside of the M Nut. Y1
Connect the two-way branch valve of the motor-driven hydraulic pump to the
push-up oil port in the M Nut with the flexible hose as shown in Fig.1.
Fit two dial gauges with magnetic holders on the propeller shaft near the
cone part boss symmetrically with each other about the center line of the
propeller shaft.
Measure with thermometers the temperatures of the propeller boss and the
shaft.
Determine, from Fig.3, the required push-up travel for the measured
temperatures of the boss and the shaft.
Then, raise the pressure in the motor-driven hydraulic pump by abt.50 kg/cm'.
at a time ( while plotting the relation between the push-up travel of the
boss and the oil pressure in Fig.4 ) until the push-up travel of the boss
comes to abt. 2 mm on the dial gauge. ( Completion of the initial push-up
operation by dry fit. )
Draw a straight line connecting the plotted points of the push-up travels
measured in (4) above.
This line corresponds to the line - A - B " shown in Fig. 5.
In accordance with the method shown in Fig. 5, determine the zero deviation
( Y ) of the push-up travel of the boss, and then draw a straight line from
point " C' in parallel to the line " A - B" to obtain the frictional
coefficient at dry fit.
( Frictional coefficient of dry fit is about 0.15.
If the coefficient is less than 0.13, it seems that something like
lubricant is jammed between boss and shaft.
So, re-fi t boss onto shaft after pulling off boss and cleaning boss
and shaft.)
In practice, the propeller must be pushed-up until the dial gauge reads the
figure less by the zero deviation ( Y )obtained in (6) than the required
push-up travel (X) determined in (2).
In other words, the required push-up travel on the dial gauge is
( Required push-up travel (X) - Zero deviation (Y)) .
(I) Stop the motor-driven hydraulic pump at the point " B" and drop the
hydraulic pressure to zero.
Connect one of the two-way branch valves of the motor-driven hydraulic pump
to the boss expansion oil port with the flexible hose (3) as shown in Fig.1.
and open the valve (a) gradually to the full.
(8) Then, after confirming that the valves (a) and (b) are full open, operate
the motor-driven hydraulic pump to raise the oil pressure and push-up the
propeller by wet-fi t.
In this operation, first set the pressure adjustable dial on the pump
110 kdcm' and raise the oil pressure to 110 kg/cd.
Then, increase pressure of the adjustable dial intermittently so that the
propeller boss moves onto the propeller shaft by abt. 1-2 mm at a time
to the point " F " of the required push-up travel.
( During the operation, record the push-up travels of the boss and the
corresponding oil pressure in the motor-driven hydraulic pump. )
(9) When the propeller boss has been pushed-up by the required push-up travel.
stop the motor-driven hydraulic pump. Then, close the valve (b) , leaving
the valve (a) open.
Then, gradually release only the boss expansion oil pressure by opening the
relife-valve of the motor-driven hydraulic pump which has been closed.
To drain oil in the oil groove of the propeller, remove the connector in the
boss expansion oil port.
About five minutes later, after confirming that the boss expansion oil
pressure returns to zero, close the valve (a) and open the valve (b) to
release the oil pressure for the boss push-up M Nut.
( At this time, confirm that the push-up travel does not change.)
(10) Plot the results of the push-up in the figure. '43
If the relation is not linear between thepush-up travel and the pressure
in the motor-driven hydraulic pump, push-up again.
The push-up operation by wet-fit is now over.
(11) Remove the dial gauges, flexible hoses, motor-driven hydraulic pump.
(12) Fit the plug to the boss expansion oil port in the propeller boss.
In the same way, put the plug into the oil port in the M Nut.
(4) Place a wooden block for buffer between the propeller boss and the nut.
At this time, a clearance between the wooden block and the aft end surface
of the propeller boss shall be about 20 mm.
(5) Remove the plug from the boss expansion oil port in the propeller boss, and
screw in the connector with a packing under it.
PY
(6) Connect a flexible hose to the connector of the boss expansion oil port and
-. to the motor-driven hydraulic pump in a manner as shown in Fig.2.
(1) Gradually raise the boss expansion oil pressure to abt.130 kg/cd and keep
i t for five minutes.
(8) If the propeller is still not pulled out, gradually raise the boss expansion
oil pressure further to abt.800 k d c d .
