Chinese Traditional Festivals

1 [1] Chinese celebrate many festivals around the year: Chinese New Year, Lantern Festival, the
Dragon Boat Festival, and the Mid-Autumn Festival, to name just a few.

[2] Chinese New Year (also called Lunar New Year) is the longest and most important festival in
China. Preparations begin well in advance as people purchase new clothing, new shoes, snacks,
5 candies, and colourful decorations with auspicious meanings.

[3] The New Year’s Eve dinner is a time for all members of the family, even those who live far
away, to gather together. The meal itself consists of ten to twelve courses which are not only
delicate and tasty, but also rife with symbolic meanings. There are dishes to symbolize health,
wealth and good fortune. For instance, fish symbolizes surplus, Chinese dumplings symbolize
10 wealth.

[4] After a family union and banquet, the new year is filled with the thunderous roar of
exploding firecrackers and screaming rockets. Customs for the new year include wearing
colourful new clothes, enjoying luxurious family feast, offering food to the gods, and giving
friends and relatives red packets.

15 [5] The ancient Chinese believed that spirits could be seen flying in the light of the first full
moon of the lunar new year. Over time, their search for those spirits evolved into the Lantern
Festival, now celebrated in temples and parks with colourful lanterns. Traditionally, Chinese
parents prepared lanterns for their children to carry on the first school day of the new year to
symbolize the hope that the children would have bright futures.

20 [6] The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month in the lunar
calendar. The legend behind the festival is about a famous poet named Chu Yuan, who lived
during the Warring States Period (403-221 BC). He was a loyal court official but the king lost the
trust in him. The desperate poet drowned himself. The people in the area respected him, so
they jumped into their boats and rushed out to save him while throwing rice into the waters to
25 appease the river dragons. The Dragon Boat Festival commemorates this loyal Chinese poet.
