INTRODUCTION
It is no wonder, then, that applied learning and internship opportunities have become
such an integral part of the college experience for all students. By providing hands-
on, real-world experience in a professional setting, internships offer a unique
opportunity for students to hone their skills, build their networks, and gain valuable
insights into their chosen fields.
Internship programs are essential for students as they provide them with an
opportunity to acquire practical skills and knowledge in a particular field. It allows
them to explore the career path they have chosen and develop their professional
networks. Furthermore, it gives them an edge in the competitive job market by
providing relevant work experience and enhancing their resumes (Vinay, 2023).
Ghimire, 2
Before starting my internship, I had expectations of learning the practical aspects of
accounting and finance in a real-world setting. I was looking forward to applying the
theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom to the practical aspects of accounting,
such as maintaining financial records, preparing financial statements, and managing
financial transactions. Additionally, I hoped to learn about the construction industry's
specific financial aspects and how to manage finances effectively within the industry.
1.3 Methodology
Methodology is akin to a well-planned itinerary, outlining the sequential steps needed
to unravel a problem with specific objectives in mind. This section delves into the
varied techniques employed for data collection and analysis, providing a roadmap for
the journey ahead (Mohajan, 2017).
The information and data required for the report were gathered from both primary and
secondary sources.
For the primary sources, I observed the working desk of different staff in the
accounting department, had direct involvement in various activities of the
department, and conducted personal interviews, informal discussions, and
consultations with the staff involved in different accounting activities.
For secondary sources, I referred to relevant literature, including accounting
software and tools, construction industry reports, and tax laws and regulations
applicable to the construction industry. Online resources, such as the
company's website and annual reports, were also utilized. Additionally,
publications, journals, and books were used to support the research conducted
during the internship.
1.4.1 Placement
For a span of 8 weeks, I had the privilege of being placed in the Finance Department,
where I worked closely under the guidance of a account head. This immersive
experience provided me with invaluable insight into the intricate workings of the
department's workflow, and helped me to develop a deeper understanding of the
accounting realm.

i. The time period of 8 weeks was not enough for a comprehensive study of the
bank. So, this report only focuses on a particular unit of a department.
ii. Due to privacy policy of the bank, many internal MIS were not accessible to
the internee and thus unavailability of adequate information created a
problem.
iii. Internees were not allowed to work in the different departments at the same
time.etc.
iv. The prime source of information for report preparation was the informal
questioning with the head employees of the bank and the observation of the
activities as well as the active involvement in the activities allowed to the
internees. Thus, the report covers only limited aspects of the total system.
v. Due to the busy work schedule of the bank’s staff, it was difficult for them to
share the overall knowledge they have.
vi. The report is based on individual understanding during the internship program
which may differ from person to person.

INTRODUCTION OF CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY
The construction industry is highly regulated, with various laws and regulations
governing the design, construction, and maintenance of structures. Construction
companies must comply with these regulations to ensure the safety of workers and the
public, as well as to avoid legal and financial consequences.
In summary, the construction industry is a critical sector of the economy that involves
the creation of buildings, infrastructure, and other structures. Construction companies
are responsible for managing and executing construction projects while complying
with various laws and regulations. The industry faces various challenges, and
companies must continuously innovate and adapt to remain competitive and
successful.
Ghimire, 10
2.2 History of Construction Industry
The construction industry has a long and rich history dating back to ancient
civilizations. The earliest recorded evidence of construction dates back to the Stone
Age, where humans used stones and other natural resources to build their dwellings
and structures. As humans evolved, so did their techniques and methods of
construction.
One of the earliest known examples of organized construction can be traced back to
ancient Egypt, where the pyramids were built using large stone blocks. The
construction of the Great Wall of China during the Qin Dynasty is also considered a
major achievement in the construction industry. During the Roman Empire, the
construction of roads, aqueducts, and public buildings were vital to the growth and
success of the empire (Jones, 2022).
The medieval period saw the construction of cathedrals and castles, which were often
built by skilled craftsmen and artisans. The Renaissance period brought about new
architectural styles and techniques, leading to the construction of grand palaces,
public buildings, and bridges. The industrial revolution brought about significant
advancements in construction technology, including the use of steam engines and
reinforced concrete.
In the 20th century, the construction industry saw significant growth due to increased
urbanization and population growth. New materials, such as steel and plastic, were
introduced, leading to the development of modern architecture and skyscrapers.
Today, the construction industry is a vital part of the global economy, employing
millions of people worldwide.
In recent years, there has been a growing focus on sustainable construction practices
and green building techniques, aimed at reducing the industry's impact on the
environment. The industry continues to evolve and innovate, with new technologies
and materials constantly being developed to improve efficiency, safety, and
sustainability.
Ghimire, 11
2.3 History of Construction Industry in Nepal
The history of the construction industry in Nepal can be traced back to the ancient
period when the first infrastructure developments, such as temples, stupas, and
palaces were built. The famous Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu, built in the 5th
century, stands as an example of the country's rich architectural and construction
heritage.
During the Rana regime (1846-1951), there was a significant development in the
construction sector with the construction of many palaces, buildings, and public
infrastructure such as hospitals, schools, and roads. This period saw the beginning of
modern construction practices in Nepal, and many skilled craftsmen were trained to
build with modern techniques (Miles, 1991).
In the 1950s, after the fall of the Rana regime, Nepal began to open up to the outside
world, and with it came modern construction practices and technology. With the aid
of international organizations, Nepal was able to develop its infrastructure, including
the construction of highways, airports, and hydroelectric power plants.
In the 1980s, the Nepalese government established the Department of Roads (DoR) to
oversee road construction in the country. This led to the development of modern road
construction methods, which greatly improved Nepal's transportation infrastructure.
Since the 1990s, the construction industry in Nepal has seen significant growth,
especially in the private sector. With the growth of the tourism industry, there has
been an increase in the construction of hotels, resorts, and other tourist facilities.
Similarly, with the growth of the real estate sector, there has been an increase in the
construction of residential and commercial buildings (Miles, 1991).
However, the construction industry in Nepal still faces challenges such as a lack of
skilled workers, poor quality control, and inadequate safety measures. Nevertheless,
with the increasing demand for infrastructure and the government's focus on
development, the construction industry in Nepal is expected to continue to grow and
play a vital role in the country's economy.
Ghimire, 12
2.4 Classification of Construction Industry in Nepal:
Classification of construction entrepreneur: The construction entrepreneurs who carry
out public construction works shall be classified as follows based on the prescribed
grounds: (a) Construction entrepreneur of class “A”; (b) Construction entrepreneur of
class “B”; (c) Construction entrepreneur of class “C”; (d) Construction entrepreneur
of class “D”.
Ghimire, 13
the country's infrastructure and contribute to the growth of the national economy.
2.6 Functions of Construction Industry
The major functions of construction companies are:
i. Project management: Construction companies are responsible for managing
the entire construction project from start to finish. This involves planning,
scheduling, and coordinating all aspects of the project, including design,
engineering, procurement, and construction.
ii. Site preparation: Construction companies are responsible for preparing the
construction site for the actual construction work. This may include clearing
the site, grading the land, installing temporary utilities, and laying the
foundation.
iii. Construction work: Construction companies are responsible for carrying out
the actual construction work, including building structures, roads, bridges, and
other infrastructure. This involves coordinating various trades such as
carpentry, masonry, electrical, and plumbing.
iv. Material management: Construction companies are responsible for procuring
and managing the materials required for the construction work. This involves
sourcing materials from suppliers, storing them, and managing inventory.
v. Equipment management: Construction companies are responsible for
procuring and managing the equipment required for the construction work.
This includes heavy machinery such as excavators, cranes, and bulldozers.
vi. Safety management: Construction companies are responsible for ensuring the
safety of their workers and the public. This involves implementing safety
procedures and protocols, providing safety equipment, and conducting safety
training.
vii. Cost management: Construction companies are responsible for managing the
costs of the construction project. This involves preparing budgets, tracking
expenses, and managing cash flow.
viii. Quality management: Construction companies are responsible for ensuring
that the construction work meets the required quality standards. This involves
conducting quality control checks, monitoring the work of subcontractors, and
ensuring that all work is completed according to the project specifications.
ix. Project closeout: Construction companies are responsible for closing out the
Ghimire, 14
project once the construction work is complete. This involves conducting a
final inspection, obtaining necessary permits and approvals, and handing over
the completed project to the owner (Indeed, 2023).
In addition to these challenges, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact
on the industry, with many projects being delayed or suspended due to the lockdowns
and supply chain disruptions. Despite these challenges, there are some positive
developments in the construction industry, including an increase in foreign
investment, government initiatives to promote infrastructure development, and the
adoption of new technologies to improve efficiency and quality (my Republica,
2023).
Furthermore, the government of Nepal has also initiated several projects, such as the
Kathmandu-Tarai Fast Track project and the Nijgadh International Airport, which are
expected to create significant opportunities for the construction industry. However,
the industry must address several challenges, including corruption, labor disputes, and
limited access to financing, to fully capitalize on these opportunities.
Ghimire, 15
According to the Contractors associated with Federation of Contractor’s Association
of Nepal. There are:
Class A- 140
Class B- 49
Class C- 44
Class D- 12 (Dokumen, 2023)
The construction industry in Nepal faces various challenges that hinder its growth and
development. Some of the major challenges are as follows:
ii. Limited access to capital: Access to finance is a significant challenge for the
construction industry in Nepal. The lack of adequate capital or financing
options makes it difficult for construction companies to undertake new
projects and complete existing ones. The limited availability of loans and
credit from banks and financial institutions further exacerbates the issue,
making it difficult for small and medium-sized construction companies to
compete with larger firms.
Ghimire, 16
iii. Political instability: Political instability and lack of consistency in
government policies are major challenges faced by the construction industry
in Nepal. Frequent changes in government policies and regulations make it
difficult for construction companies to plan and execute their projects
effectively. Moreover, political unrest and instability create an unfavorable
investment climate, discouraging foreign investors from investing in the
construction sector.
Despite these challenges, the construction industry in Nepal also presents several
opportunities, including:
ii. Tourism development: Nepal is a popular destination for tourists, and the
tourism industry is growing rapidly. This presents an opportunity for
construction companies to undertake projects such as hotels, resorts, and other
tourism-related infrastructure.
Housing development: Nepal has a growing population, and there is a need for
affordable housing. This presents an opportunity for construction companies
to undertake residential projects.
Ghimire, 17
iii. Hydro-power development: Nepal has significant potential for hydro-power
development, which presents an opportunity for construction companies to
undertake large-scale projects.
iv. Green building: There is a growing awareness of the need for sustainable
construction practices in Nepal. This presents an opportunity for construction
companies to adopt green building practices and differentiate themselves in
the market.

4.7 Observed Gaps
Through the internship program, the internee came to the realization that academic
knowledge can only take one so far in the realm of practical application. A chasm
exists between theoretical teachings and actual experiences, yet the importance of
conceptual understanding cannot be understated in effectively navigating professional
scenarios. In essence, concepts serve as the bedrock for any task performed in a
working environment. One cannot simply rely on textbook knowledge to seamlessly
translate to real-life situations. This was exemplified in the challenges of maintaining
interpersonal relationships in practice, which proved far more complex than their
simplistic depictions in theory. As such, the acquisition of practical knowledge and
experience is integral to bridging the gap between academia and the working world.
During the internship period, the internee observed several gaps in the accounting
system and financial management of Raman Nirman Sewa. Some of the major gaps
are mentioned below:
i. The company lacked a proper accounting software or system, which made it
difficult to track financial transactions and generate financial reports.
ii. The company did not maintain proper documentation of financial transactions,
which could lead to errors and discrepancies in financial records.
iii. The company did not have a proper system for internal controls and checks,
which could lead to the misappropriation of funds.
iv. The company did not have a proper budgeting system in place, which made it
difficult to track expenses and revenues against the budgeted amount.
v. The company did not have a proper cash management system, which made it
difficult to manage the company's cash flow and resulted in cash shortages at
times.
vi. The company did not have a proper system for managing accounts receivable
and payable, which led to delayed payments to vendors and customers.
vii. The company did not have a proper system for monitoring project costs and
profitability, which made it difficult to identify profitable projects and make
informed decisions.
viii. The company did not have a proper system for managing inventory, which
resulted in overstocking or under stocking of materials.
Ghimire, 37
ix. The company did not have a proper system for managing fixed assets, which
made it difficult to track the depreciation of assets and determine their current
value.
x. The company did not have a proper system for managing taxes and
compliance, which could lead to penalties and fines from regulatory bodies.
xi. The company did not have a proper system for managing payroll and
employee benefits, which could lead to employee dissatisfaction and turnover.
xii. The company did not have a proper system for managing financial risks and
uncertainties, which could lead to financial losses and instability.
xiii. The company did not have a proper system for financial reporting and
analysis, which made it difficult to make informed decisions based on
financial information.
xiv. The company did not have a proper system for performance measurement and
evaluation, which made it difficult to evaluate the performance of employees
and departments.
The internship program presented the internee with several critical observations,
which contributed towards fostering a more optimistic outlook towards the banking
work environment, and instilled within me a strong drive to pursue a career in this
field.
Ghimire, 38
CHAPTER FIVE
Ghimire, 39
CONCLUSION/ LESSON LEARNT AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The internship provided opportunities to analyze and solve real-life problems in the
construction industry. The intern was able to gain knowledge about the overall
operations of the company, including its projects, financial performance, and
accounting procedures. The internship also helped in enhancing personal, analytical,
and managerial skills and capacity.
The experience of dealing with clients and contractors and managing financial
transactions was very beneficial and constructive towards the intern's professional
life. The internship boosted the intern's confidence level and interpersonal skills, and
helped in developing problem-solving and decision-making ability. Overall, the
internship at Raman Nirman Sewa was a great source of learning and experiences for
the intern, and will be applicable in the career path in the construction industry.
v. Communication Skills
As an accounting intern, I had to communicate with different stakeholders, including
project managers, senior accountants, and vendors. Through these interactions, I
improved my communication skills and learned how to explain financial information
in a clear and concise manner.
Ghimire, 41
effectively with different team members to achieve common goals.
5.3 Recommendations
After conducting an internship at Raman Nirman Sewa, I would like to recommend
the following improvements for the organization:
i. Raman Nirman Sewa should focus on promoting digitalization and
automation in their operations to enhance efficiency and productivity.
Implementation of advanced construction management software could be a
potential solution to manage project planning, scheduling, cost estimation, and
tracking.
ii. Employee training and development programs should be conducted on a
regular basis to enhance the skills and knowledge of employees. This will not

the organization.
Ghimire, 42
v. Raman Nirman Sewa should invest in research and development to identify
new technologies and materials that can be used to enhance the quality of
work and reduce the overall cost of construction.
Overall, these recommendations can assist Raman Nirman Sewa in enhancing their
operations and increasing their reputation in the construction industry.
