Mathematics Learning Experience for Grade 1 (C7)

Teaching and Learning Plan: Visualizing and Drawing Regions for Grade 1 Learners

Objective: By the end of this lesson, grade 1 learners will be able to visualize and
draw the whole region or set given its 1/2 and/or 1/4 divisions through play-based
and interactive learning activities.

Materials Needed:

1. Large poster paper or whiteboard

2. Colored markers or crayons

3. Colored paper strips or fraction square (optional)

4. Scissors (optional)

5. Worksheets with simple shapes divided into halves and quarters (downloaded or
prepared in advance)

6. Pencils

Duration: Approximately 45 minutes

Procedure:

1. Introduction (5 minutes):

 Gather the learners in a circle and introduce the concept of fractions

using familiar objects, such as a pizza or a chocolate bar.

 Explain that fractions are a way to divide a whole into equal parts.

 Show visual aids, such as fraction circles, to help learners understand

the concept.

2. Playful Exploration (10 minutes):

 Provide each learner with colored paper strips or fraction circles (if
available).

 Instruct the learners to fold the paper strips or fraction square in half
and discuss how it divides the whole into two equal parts.

 Encourage the learners to experiment with different ways of folding to

create halves.
 Ask questions to reinforce their understanding, such as "How many
equal parts are in a whole when it's divided in half?"

3. Drawing Activity: Halves (15 minutes):

 Distribute worksheets or individual pieces of paper with simple shapes

divided into halves (e.g., square, rectangle).

 Guide the learners to visualize the halves and draw lines to divide the
shapes accordingly.

 Encourage them to use pencils to draw lightly and erase any mistakes if
necessary.

 Circulate around the room, providing individual guidance and support as

needed.

4. Drawing Activity: Quarters (15 minutes):

 Introduce the concept of quarters by explaining that it is dividing a whole

into four equal parts.

 Provide new worksheets or individual pieces of paper with simple shapes

divided into quarters.

 Instruct the learners to visualize the quarters and draw lines to divide
the shapes accordingly.

 Encourage creativity by allowing learners to choose different shapes or

sizes for their regions.

 Provide guidance and assistance where needed, ensuring that the

learners understand how to divide the shapes into quarters.

5. Group Sharing and Reflection (5 minutes):

 Allow the learners to share their drawings with the class, describing the
regions they have created and explaining how they divided them into
halves and quarters.

 Encourage a positive and supportive environment where learners can

appreciate each other's efforts.

 Recap the lesson by discussing the importance of fractions and how they
help us understand parts of a whole.

Extension Activities (Optional):

 Learners can create their own "Fraction Folders" where they collect and paste
pictures or drawings of objects divided into halves or quarters.

 Use everyday objects, such as fruits or cookies, to practice visualizing and

dividing them into halves and quarters during snack time.

 Incorporate interactive fraction games or online resources that engage learners

in further exploration of halves and quarters.
