Mathematics Learning Experience for Grade 1 (C15)

Competency: Determines the day of the month using a calendar

Grade Level: Grade 1

Duration: 60 minutes

Teaching and Learning Plan:

Objective: Learners will be able to determine the day of the month using a calendar
through play-based and interactive activities.

Materials Needed:

 Large calendar or visual aid displaying the current month

 Individual mini-calendars for each learner

 Flashcards with numbers 1-31

 Pocket chart or magnetic board

 Marker or sticky notes

 Song lyrics or video about days of the week and months of the year

Activity:

1. Introduction (5 minutes)

 Gather the learners in a circle.

 Show the large calendar or visual aid displaying the current month.

 Ask learners if they know how to find out what day of the month it is
using a calendar.

 Explain that they will learn how to determine the day of the month
through fun activities.

2. Calendar Walk (15 minutes)

 Give each learner a mini-calendar.

 Instruct the learners to walk around the classroom or designated area


while holding their mini-calendars.

 Play upbeat music and encourage the learners to move freely.


 Randomly stop the music and call out a number between 1 and 31.

 Learners must quickly find that number on their mini-calendars and


hold it up.

 Repeat this activity several times with different numbers.

3. Calendar Sorting (15 minutes)

 Display the large calendar or visual aid in the front of the classroom.

 Introduce the flashcards with numbers 1-31.

 Place the flashcards face down on a table or floor.

 Call out a number, and learners must find the corresponding flashcard
and place it on the calendar in the correct position.

 Discuss and explain the process as you go along.

 Use a pocket chart or magnetic board to reinforce the concept, allowing


learners to place the flashcards in the correct positions.

4. Calendar Race (15 minutes)

 Divide the class into pairs or small groups.

 Give each group a marker or a set of sticky notes.

 Call out a number between 1 and 31.

 Groups must work together to find that number on their mini-calendars


and mark it with the marker or sticky note.

 The first group to correctly mark the number receives a point.

 Repeat this activity several times, keeping track of the points earned by
each group.

5. Recap and Closure (10 minutes)

 Review the concept of determining the day of the month using a


calendar.

 Sing songs about days of the week and months of the year together.

 Ask learners to share one thing they learned about using a calendar to
determine the day of the month.

Assessment:
 Observe learners' active participation and engagement during the activities.

 Monitor their ability to find and place the correct numbers on their mini-
calendars and on the large calendar or visual aid.

 Assess their understanding through discussions and their responses during the
recap and closure phase.

Note: This lesson plan is designed to be completed within a 60-minute session.
