Tutorial 4: Deflection of Beams and Shafts

Q1] A picture is taken of a man performing a pole vault, and the minimum radius of curvature of the pole is
estimated by measurement to be 4.5 𝑚. If the pole is 40 𝑚𝑚 in diameter and it is made of a glass-
reinforced plastic for which 𝐸 = 131 𝐺𝑃𝑎, determine the maximum bending stress in the pole.

Ans:
𝜎 = 582 𝑀𝑃𝑎

Q2] Draw the bending-moment diagram for the shaft and then, from this diagram, sketch the elastic curve
for the shaft’s centreline. Determine the equations of the elastic curve, by the integration method, using
the coordinates 𝑥1 and 𝑥2 . 𝐸𝐼 is constant.

Ans:

Q3] The simply supported wood beam 𝐴𝐵𝐶 in the figure below has the rectangular cross section shown. The
beam supports a concentrated load of 300 𝑁 located 2 𝑚 from the left support. Determine, by the
integration method the maximum displacement and the maximum slope angle of the beam. Use 𝐸 =
12 𝐺𝑃𝑎 for the modulus of elasticity. Neglect the weight of the beam. (Note that the reactions at 𝐴 and
𝐶 have already been computed by equilibrium analysis.)

Ans:
𝑣 ′ (𝐴𝐵) = (2.441 𝑥 2 − 6.510) × 10−3
𝑣 (𝐴𝐵) = (0.8138 𝑥 3 − 6.510𝑥) × 10−3 𝑚
𝑣 ′ (𝐵𝐶) = (2.441 𝑥 2 − 7.324 (𝑥 − 2)2 − 6.510) × 10−3
𝑣 (𝐵𝐶) = (0.8138 𝑥 3 − 2.441 (𝑥 − 2)2 − 6.510𝑥) × 10−3 𝑚
𝑣𝑚𝑎𝑥 = 7.09 𝑚𝑚 ↓
