COMPLETED RESEARCH PROJECTS

Project: Advanced PGM-free Cathode Engineering for High Power Density and Durability funded by US
Department of Energy. Sep 2017– Jan 2019
To produce high power density and durable platinum group metal (PGM)-free cathodes for PEMFCs
through designing advanced electrode architectures and leveraging new catalyst and ionomer materials.
Project: Highly Robust Low PGM MEAs Based upon Composite Supports funded by US Department of
Energy. Feb 2017– August 2017
To develop low PGM based membrane-electrode assemblies (MEAs) of fuel cell with improved corrosion
resistance, using a nanotechnology-enabling coating solution.
Project: Materials and Approaches for the Mitigation of SOFC Cathode Degradation in SOFC Power
Systems funded by US Department of Energy. Feb 2016–
August 2017
The overall objective of the project is to develop cost effective, highly efficient getters (filters) for
capturing chromium in gas streams of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) to increase the reliability and
endurance of SOFC stacks.
Project: The Effect of Airborne Contaminants on Fuel Cell Performance and Durability funded by US
Department of Energy. Aug 2011 – Jan 2016
The objective of the project is to evaluate the effects of key cathode side cation contaminants on the
performance and durability of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) fuel cells and develop mitigation
techniques through experimental and theoretical study.
Project: Role of Gas Diffusion Media (GDM) design on Liquid Water Behavior in PEM Fuel Cell funded by
NISSAN MOTOR CO. Aug 2013 – Jan 2015
The project assesses the role of specific design of GDM, i.e. thickness of each layer as well as wet-
proofing treatments to optimize water management in PEM fuel cell.
Project: Controlled Synthesis of Energy Material using PVD system. Aug 2013 – Jan 2016
