 About The Durgapur Steel Plant:-

Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) located in Durgapur, is one of the five integrated steel plants
under Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) which is one of the seven Maharatna’s of the
country’s Central Public Sector Enterprises. Durgapur steel plant was set up in the late
fifties with an initial production capacity of 1 MTPA (million ton per annum) crude steel
which was progressively increased to 1.8 MTPA during the last modernization in nineties
with the prime objective of achieving higher level of production, improvement in productivity
and quality, conservation of energy, reduction in cost of production & minimization of
environmental pollution.

This particular steel manufacturing unit of SAIL gave Durgapur a distinct identity for which it
is popularly called the Steel City. Its geographical location is defined as 23° 27' North and
88° 29' East. It is situated on the banks of the Damodar River.

Unique feature of Durgapur Steel Plant is its Wheel & Axle Plant for making forged wheels
and axles catering to Indian Railways of higher quality. The plant is performing beyond its
rated capacities consistently and the production and TE parameters are at best ever levels.

Over the years, DSP has contributed in a major way which has produced social,
environmental and economic benefits to the communities in which it operates. CSR
projects are carried out and steel townships and other close locations in the areas of
education, providing medical and health care facilities, village development, access to
water facilities, infrastructural development, environment conservation, women
empowerment, assistance to people with disabilities, sustainable income generation,
through self-help groups, promotion of sports, art, culture etc. Durgapur Steel Plant is also
playing major role in encouraging and developing small-scale industries in the region.

Durgapur Steel Plant provides various facilities to the employees and builds up a township
spread over a sprawling 40 sq. km with more than 25,000 dwelling units. It has also
housing facilities for the employees of ASP and other business associates. The other
amenities include schools, both primary and secondary, a 640 bed hospital with modern
medical facilities, the picturesque park, a number of cultural centers, a stadium with a
sitting capacity of 15,000, etc.

1.0 Project Description:-
UNDERGROUND MAPPING (PACKAGE-IIA) FOR NSTALLATION OF NEW WAGON
TIPPLER/TRACK HOPPER IN RMHP AT DURGAPUR STEEL PLANT, DURGAPUR,
PASCHIM BARDHAMAN, WEST BENGAL.

 Purpose of The Project:

Current layout of underground facilities is not available, which are essentially required

for planning the new facilities, for that it is required to carry out underground mapping.

The data generated from this package shall be used as basis for planning and

designing of various units / facilities under all other packages as required.

2.0 Data Available:

We have started the survey work by taking Reference co-ordinate points from DSP .
a) Point – SP1 E: 9665.007, N: 19020.774, RL: 80.083
b) Point – SP2 E: 9663.488, N: 18959.052, RL: 80.630

 3.0 Scope of The Work :-

Reconnaissance Survey:-
I. Our survey team along with authorized representative from Engineer-In-
Charge of project initially went to the site on the field for total Site
observation to make a Planning for execution of the total work.

Details of Survey:-

I. We make survey by Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Digicat and Cable

Route Tracer CRT-8 for detecting underground utilities, existing cables,
water pipe line and sewerage line to explore tentative location of
underground features in the proposed site of DSP, Durgapur.

II. We also make survey by Digicat and Manual Excavation for detecting
underground utilities, existing cables, water pipe line and sewerage line to
explore tentative location of underground features in the proposed project
area, Durgapur.
III. We also make survey to explore the existing ground level to generate
contour profile.

a) Data Analysis and Drawing Preparation:-

With the help of collected data and analyzing, we prepared Underground Utility drawing
with following details:-

I. Analysis of GPR Data for finding out the presence of existing cables,
pipelines and service line in presence of Engineer-in charge.
II. Existing structure and permanent features in and around the proposed area
are identified and described.
III. Excavation soil for finding out the presence of existing cables, pipelines and
service line in presence of Engineer-in charge, SAIL-DSP.

b) Deliverables:-
I. Submission of final drawing in scale indicating existing underground
features.
II. Detail report including grid markings in the area, complete in all respect.

 4.0 Instruments Used for This Project:-
For Survey work we have used the following instruments as detailed below:

a. GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) :

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is a non-
destructive geophysical method that produces a
continuous cross-sectional profile or subsurface
features, without drilling, probing or digging. The
GPR cross section shows the ground surface at
the top of the profile, and the reflections of
subsurface geologic units and objects to a certain
depth at the bottom.
 GPR uses high-frequency (usually polarized)
radio waves usually in the range 10 MHz to 2.6 GHz.
 It is used to study bedrock, soils, groundwater, and ice, fresh water, pavements
and structures.
 It is also used to locate buried structures and utility lines, and studying soils and
bedrock, detection of mines, unexploded ordnance, tunnels and locating
underground utilities.

b. Digicat:

The Digicat is used for underground survey for detecting and

understand the situation of the ground. It is simple to use and
gives an indication of presence of any kind of material under
the top surface. Defaulting to power mode, maximum
sensitivity ensures operators are protected against lethal
electrical cables, whilst additional modes are used to detect
other buried utilities.

S S Solution, Durgapur Page 6

 It gives simple solution for underground surveys.

 It is used to locate buried structures and utility lines, bedrock, unexploded

ordnance, tunnels and locating underground utilities.

c. Cable Route Tracer CRT-8:

Cable Route Tracer CRT-8 is an essential item in the kit for fault location of
underground power and telecom cable network. It is a powerful audio frequency
system that can be effectively used for various unique functions such as route tracing
of any metallic cable, depth measurement, live loaded cable tracing and ground
survey of underground utilities.

The system is capable to trace route of underground cable by triangulation method.

This method is found to give
more accurate results in
presence of other metallic
utilities in close proximity.
The system is accurately
identifying the wanted cable
from the bunch of cables in
communication network.
The system can be used to
trace route of loaded live
cable with the help of
receiver unit and search coil
in passive mode. It is also use to carry out ground survey and metallic pipe route
tracing in inductive mode effectively.

It is used for route tracing of any underground metallic cable in communication, power
transmission, distribution and signal cable networks or cable fault location service
provider. It is also use to identification of wanted cable from bunch of cables in
communication network

5.0 Project Location:-

The Central Co-ordinate of the project area is 23°32'30.45"N Latitude & 87°14'56.81"E

Longitude.
