R 1. Ana visited her balikbayan friend who checked in a hotel. She was confused on
E what floor her friend is. So, she took the hotel elevator from the ground floor, went
L up to the 6th floor, down to the 3rd floor, then went up again to the 5 floors. On what
I floor is she now?
M 2. While Ana waiting her friend in the cafeteria, she bought a drink worth Php 12.00.
I She said that she supposed to receive a change of Php 8.00 from her Php 20.00.
N A. TRUE B. FALSE
A REVIEW:
R Do the following:
I 1. Consider rolling a die. What would be the average value of the outcomes obtained?
E 2. Your friend has 5 different breeds of dog. He measured the heights of the dogs in
S millimeters. The heights are measured at the shoulders of each dog. Illustrate the mean
and variance of the heights.

PRESENTATION:
Today, let us learn how to illustrate and calculate the mean and variance of a discrete
random variable.
ACTIVITY:
THINK PAIR – SHARE
Activity 1. Your friend Joe likes to roll a die. As usual, the probability of getting a1 is the same
as the other number in the die. In the previous activity, we have illustrated the mean for the
experiment. Now, let us follow the steps in finding the mean of a discrete random variable.
STEPS SOLUTION
1. Construct the probability distribution for NUMBER X P(X)
the random variable X representing the
number that would appear.

2. Multiply the value of the random variable NUMBER X P(X) X∙P(X)

X by the corresponding probability P(X).

3. Add the results obtained in Step 2. (third

column)

Activity 2. USWAG Community Kitchen
The City Mayor initiated the Community Kitchen on March 22, 2020 when the city was
placed under enhanced community quarantine. The Community Kitchen is a program
wherein the parent leaders, daycare workers, and SF workers prepared meals to be
delivered to the people in the community. The table below shows the probability
distribution. Find the mean, variance and standard deviation of the probability
distribution.

STEPS SOLUTION
1. Find the mean of the probability NUMBER OF P(X) X∙P(X)
distribution using the formula 𝜇=Σ𝑋 ∙𝑃(𝑋). FOOD
PACKS X

2. Multiply the square of the value of the X X2 P(X) X 2 ∙P(X)

random variable X by its corresponding
probability.

3. Get the sum of the results obtained in

Step 2. 2
X ∙P(X)

2
Σ X ∙ P ( X )=¿

4. Subtract the square of the mean from

the results obtained in Step 3 to get the
variance. So, the formula for the
variance of the probability distribution
is σ 2=Σ X 2 ∙ P(X )−μ2 .

The standard deviation is the

square root of the variance.
Thus,
σ =√ Σ X 2 ∙ P ( X )−μ2.
ANALYSIS:
1. If X is discrete random variable, what is the other term for the mean of X?
2. What is the notation used for the mean of X?
3. What is expected value of a random variable?
4. How calculate the mean of random variable?
5. What formula is used to calculate the mean of the probability distribution?
6. What is a variance?
