CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background Of The Study

Light pollution, also known as artificial light at night, is the excessive or

inefficient use of artificial outdoor lighting, to show that The Community Science

Project Globe at Night ( January 19, 2023 ) discovered that global light pollution

doubles every eight years. According to a new study published in Science, global sky

brightness increased by an estimated 9.6% per year between 2011 and 2022 . Further

more if light pollution continues, an increased amount of light at night

lowers melatonin production, which results in sleep deprivation, fatigue, headaches,

stress, anxiety, and other health problems(National Geographic). From 2012 to 2019,

Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) satellite imagery and radiance

data were processed in Mindanao Philippines using different codes to identify the

pixel count as the extent of light pollution radiance in Mindanao, Philippines. The

region's pixel count has increased and spread significantly as a result of light pollution

from 2012 to 2019 (Research Gate).

For this reason, the researcher learned a way to create low and ambient

artificial light by using CPU fan. In addition CPU fan is used to keep the heat sink of

the CPU (Central Processing Unit) cool. It comes in a variety of sizes and is typically

made of copper and/or aluminum. (Computer Hope).

2

The study's goal is to determine whether it is possible to generate

artificial light using a CPU fan. It is hoped that it will help to reduce light pollution in

the night sky and assist people who do not have access to electricity given the fact that

the study does not need electricity.

Objectives Of The Study

Review Of Related Literature

This chapter shows the reviewed literature from some readings of previous

studies and facts from the internet. This is to guide and help the researchers in

development of determining CPU fan to generate Electromagnetic Radiation

(artificial light). This review is conducting the recent study as well as the analysis

results.

To add more it is possible to make make a mini windmill that can create

Electromagnetic Radiation (artificial light) using CPU fan. With enough power to

spin the CPU Fan you using magnets attracting each other a simple dynamo is to be

created.

First, “How Do We Make Electricity from Steam?” by The Natural Edge, et

al,. The force of the stem results reaction on the rotor blades, transferring most

steam’s pressure potential energy and linear kinetic energy to the rotor’s blade linear

kinetic energy and hence the turbine shaft’s rotational kinetic energy.

Second, Old PC Fan to Turbines, the project of Ahmed Ebeed (June 12,

2020) The LED terminals connected to the supply (the winding terminals), the LED

produced light. The researcher looked at some old pc fans and have thought that they

can be use as a small wind turbines. AeroArduino.

Such as, Research Article: A Permanent Magnet Generator for Energy

Conversion from Marine Currents: No Load and Load Experiments, studied by Karin

Thomas. The low armature reaction

6

and high overload capability show that the generator can be used to electrically

control and brake the turbine in the intended range of operation.

Also, The method of Field Inspired Electricity Generator Using Super

Magnets by Prof.Achala Jain, et al,. July 2017, describes how permanent magnets

alone can be used to produce continuous motion and provide a surplus of mechanical

energy that can be used for other purposes such as driving an electric generator.

Recently, the project organizers have set a new challenge: to provide light

when the sun goes down. The nocturnal lamps incorporate an LED bulb which works

for three or four hours thanks to a small solar cell which charges two

small batteries during the day. (See video below.) “Liter of Night Light” is raising

funds to be able to install the system in as many homes as possible.

In the Philippines, the My Shelter Foundation builds houses with sustainable

and recyclable materials. In 2011 they learned about Moser’s invention and began to

integrate the lamp in the constructions. The foundation also started a business

model which allows the local population to obtain a small sum of money to assemble

and install the lamps after training in their workshops. In just a few months, they

installed 15,000 bottles in 20 cities in the Philippines.

Meanwhile, litroenergy is a patent pending designed light source material

that emits light for 12 plus years without electricity or sun exposure. Developed by

Steve Stark and Michael Kohnen II of MPK Co, the long-life, self-luminous micro

particles called Lithospheres emit light continuously for 12 plus years (half-life point)

without any exposure to a light or other energy source and are not affected by cold or

heat. (Authored By: Tessa Henderson)(November 27, 2009)

7

Whereas, water light is a portable, low-cost LED lamp that uses saltwater to

recharge its batteries. It was designed for communities with little to no electricity

access. The innovative device doesn’t require a power outlet to charge because it uses

a water-activated magnesium battery that causes a reaction when in contact with brine

(salty water).

Along with, Optical interference produced by artificial light , by Adriano J.C.

Moreira et al,.May 1997) Wireless infrared transmission systems for indoor use are

affected by noise and interference induced by natural and artificial ambient light. The

measurements show that fluorescent lamps driven by solid state ballasts produce the

wider band interfering signals, and are then expected to be the more important source

of degradation in optical wireless systems.

While, wind turbines work on a simple principle: instead of using electricity

to make wind—like a fan—wind turbines use wind to make electricity. Wind turns the

propeller-like blades of a turbine around a rotor, which spins a generator, which

creates electricity to light a halogen light bulb. (U.S Department of Energy)

Moreover, Pedaling to Produce Energy by Bob Koigi, (September 27, 2019)

stated by Bonga Power Bike, transforms the mechanical energy generated when one is

pedaling into electrical energy that is stored in a battery.

Lastly, Penny Battery Light an LED with five cents authored by Khan

Academy 2017-11-20). A stack of three cells is enough voltage to light a red LED,

which require 1.7 volts

According to Tom's Hardware (February 9, 2022), the market shipped more

than 500 million CPU units in 2021. As technology advances, the previous CPU will

be discarded, and its components (such as the CPU fan) will be discarded. There may
8

have been previous studies on how to generate Electromagnetic Radiation (artificial

light) without using electricity, but the researcher will be using a CPU fan, which is a

common component of today's computers.

The above related literature and studies have provided the researcher the

basic understanding about the efectivity of CPU fan to generate Electromagnetic

Radiation (artificial light) which the researcher integrated in the study.

result, there is a significant difference between artificial light ran by the CPU fan and

electricity, the artificial light ran by electricity last longer. Furthermore according to

The National Academics of Science. Engineering and Medicine (2023), Artificial

light generated by electricity has revolutionized the way we live by providing reliable

and long-lasting illumination. In fact, one of the key advantages of electric light

sources is their durability and long lifespan, which has made them an essential part of

modern infrastructure and technology.

Unlike natural light sources such as the sun or fire, which have limited

lifetimes and are subject to fluctuations in intensity and duration, electric lights are

designed to operate for thousands of hours without interruption. This is due to the fact

that they are powered by electricity, which provides a constant and reliable source of

energy.

The longevity of electric lights is due in large part to the use of advanced

materials and technologies that are resistant to wear and tear and can withstand harsh

environmental conditions. For example, many modern light bulbs are made with

tungsten filaments that are capable of withstanding high temperatures and stress,

which allows them to last for thousands of hours.

In addition, advancements in lighting technology have led to the development of more

efficient and long-lasting light sources such as LED (light emitting diodes), which are

capable of lasting for tens of thousands of hours. This makes them an ideal choice for
applications where reliability and longevity are critical, such as street lighting,

industrial facilities, and commercial buildings.

Moreover, electric lights are easy to control and adjust, allowing for greater

flexibility in lighting design and operation. They can be turned on and off instantly,

and their brightness and color temperature can be adjusted to suit specific needs and

preferences.

In conclusion, the durability and long lifespan of artificial light generated

by electricity have made it an essential part of modern society. From powering our

homes and businesses to lighting our streets and highways, electric lights have

become a cornerstone of our infrastructure and technology. With continued

advancements in lighting technology, we can expect even longer-lasting and more

efficient light sources in the years to come.
