The best way in assessing employees in different sectors would be with position-specific

assessments. A good example of this would be by using competency-based appraisals. Competency-

based appraisals use standards which are both observable and measurable. The standards used in
competency-based appraisals would also be beneficial as they are specifically modified to address
concerns for that employee’s specific sector. Given that this would be a more sophisticated approach
than a general appraisal, the problems of the employee’s techniques and performances could be easily
addressed before the work proper.

As a hiring manager for two different employee sections, I would need to have an approach
which is fair and efficient for both the company and the employees. I will do this by making sure that the
employee understands the expectations of their job performance and I will make a list of the standards
which I will assess them by. The basis of the standards will be dependent on their section. For the
marketing employees, I will see how well they understand the product and how well they interact with
potential clients, possibly using the BARS rating method or with client surveys. For the technical
employees, I will determine how well they can use the equipment and how they adhere to the safety
protocols in the laboratory. The essay appraisal, checklist method, or peer-to-peer assessment could be
used in evaluating a technical employee.

In the evaluation process, I prefer doing it quantitatively than qualitatively. I believe that an
evaluation must be conducted fairly. In that line of thought, qualitative assessments may be subject to
prejudice and stereotyping. Quantitative evaluations are more objective than qualitative and can be
better understood by the managers and superiors. Qualitative evaluations can be based on the
supervisor’s personal standards and bias and could therefor be misinterpreted by the superiors. With a
quantitative approach, not only would this be fair to the employee, but this information could also be
utilized in the development of the organization.
