GRAMMAR

1. Cách dùng

a. Diễn tả hành động đã xảy ra và đã chấm dứt trong quá khứ, không còn liên quan tới hiện tại.

Ví dụ: We bought the house in 2000. (Chúng tôi mua ngôi nhà đó năm 2000.)

b. Diễn đạt các hành động xảy ra liên tiếp trong quá khứ

Ví dụ: She turned on her computer, read the message on Facebook and answered it. (Cô ấy bật máy
tính, đọc tin nhắn trên facebook rồi trả lời nó.)

c, Diễn tả hồi ức, kỉ niệm

Ví dụ: When I was small, I used to go fishing in the afternoon. (Hồi còn nhỏ, tôi thường đi câu cá vào
buổi chiều.)

2. Công thức

a. Với câu khẳng định

(+) He came to school last week.

(+) I was at home last night
* Lưu ý khi thêm đuôi –ed

+ Nếu những động từ tận cùng là “-e” thì ta chỉ việc thêm “-d” vào sau cùng mà thôi.

Ví dụ: type → typed, love → loved , like→ liked

+ Với những động từ một âm tiết, tận cùng là một phụ âm, trước là một nguyên âm thì ta phải gấp
đôi phụ âm cuối trước khi thêm —ed.

Ví dụ: stop → stopped , shop → shopped , tap → tapped

* Với những động từ có hai âm tiết, tận cùng là một phụ âm, trước là một nguyên âm thì ta phải dựa
vào trọng âm của từ đó trước khi quyết định có gấp đôi phụ âm cuối khi thêm ed hay không.

Ví dụ:

* Nếu trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết đầu thì ta chỉ việc thêm -ed vào sau từ đó.

listen → listened , enter → entered , cancel → canceled , stay → stayed

* Nếu trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ 2 thì ta phải gấp đôi phụ âm cuối trước khi thêm –ed.

Ví dụ: commit→ committed , prefer → preferred

+ Với những từ tận cùng là -y.

* Nếu trước -y là một nguyên âm thì ta chỉ việc thêm -ed vào sau "y".

Ví dụ: play → played

• Nếu trước -y là một phụ âm thì ta phải chuyển "y" thành "i” rồi mới thêm —ed.

Ví dụ: study → studied ,cry → cried

+ Đối với động từ bất quy tắc

b. Với câu phủ định và nghi vấn * Với động từ thường ta mượn trợ động từ “did”

(-): S + did + not + V(nguyên dạng) (did not = didn't)

VD: He did not come to school last week.

(?): Did + S + V(nguyên dạng) ?

VD: Did she come to school last week?

* Với động từ tobe

(-) (S+ was/were+not+.....

VD: I wasn't at home last night

(?): Was/were+S+......?
VD: Were you at home last night

3. Dấu hiệu nhận biết thì quá khứ đơn

Trong câu có các trạng từ chỉ thời gian trong quá khứ:

* yesterday (hôm qua)

* last night/ last week/ last month/ last year: tối qua/ tuần trước/ tháng trước năm ngoái

* ago: cách đây. (two hours ago: cách đây 2 giờ/ two weeks ago; cách đây 2 tuần ...)

* in + một mốc thời gian trong quá khứ ( in 1998, in 2000....)

* when: khi (trong câu kể)

Bài 13: Chia động từ trong ngoặc ở thì quá khứ đơn để hoàn thành câu chuyện

Snow White was the daughter of a beautiful queen, who died when the girl (be)1 …… young. Her
