CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background and Rationale

The gaming industry, which is becoming more popular due to online games, has been

influenced by advanced technology in the 21st century. To experience a new form of

entertainment, they’ve engaged millions of users on the Internet. There are a lot of people in the

Philippines who like online gaming, and they’re mostly students.

A well-known MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) game created for mobile devices is

called Mobile Legends. It is a 5v5 Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) for iOS and

Android devices that offers a variety playable heroes, games modes, and with controls optimized

for touchscreen devices. In the year 2020, Philippines were in Ranked No. 2 in the game highest

number of download which have a 41.2 million or 15% of the app’s total number of downloads.

(De Guzman, 2020).

It has gained significant popularity among adolescents and young adults worldwide,

including grade 10, students. The game features strategic gameplay, teamwork, and competitive

elements, which often captivate the attention of its players.

In recent years, concerns have been raised about the potential impact of Mobile Legends

on the academic performance of students. As mobile devices become more accessible, students

are increasingly engaging in gaming activities, sometimes leading to excessive playing habits

that can interfere with their academic commitments.

2

According to the research conducted by Garcia (2020), it was discovered that students who

develop an addiction to Mobile Legends may experience negative effects on their academic

performance. When students spend excessive amounts of time playing this game, they often

neglect their school responsibilities, resulting in lower grades, and in some cases, even failing

grades. Additionally, students may also experience a decline in their ability to learn and

concentrate, further impacting their academic abilities.

However, Mobile Legends offers benefits to students in terms of enhancing their

problem-solving abilities. The game requires players to employ strategies to succeed, stimulating

their mental activity and aiding them in making decisions under challenging circumstances.

Additionally, the game's time constraints foster quick thinking and decision-making skills.

Furthermore, research indicates that engaging in online games like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang

can augment students' creativity levels (Jana, 2020).

Recent studies have demonstrated that playing online games, particularly Multiplayer

Online Battle Arena (MOBA) games, can enhance an individual's eye-hand coordination

abilities. Engaging in these games requires strategic thinking, focused attention, sensorimotor

skills, and collaborative teamwork, all of which exert significant cognitive demands on the brain.

The research findings indicated that players of MOBA games exhibit accelerated information

processing, allocate greater cognitive resources to individual visual stimuli, and effectively

distribute limited cognitive capacity across successive stimuli over time (Kershner, 2020).

This study aims to investigate the relationship between Mobile Legends usage and the

academic performance of grade 10 students in Calubian National High School.

3

Statement of the Problem

This study primarily aimed to answer the following research questions:

1. How does the presence of Mobile Legends among grade 10 students of Calubian National

High School influence their study habits and self-discipline?

2. Does playing Mobile Legends during study or class hours affects the ability to

concentrate and focus on their academic responsibilities?

3. What are the negative effects of playing Mobile Legends among the academic

performance of grade 10 students in Calubian National High School?

Conceptual Framework

Mobile Legends, a popular multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game, has gained

significant attention among adolescents in recent years. With its accessibility and engaging

gameplay, it has become a common recreational activity. However, concerns have emerged

regarding its potential impact on students’ academic performance. This conceptual framework

aims to explore the relationship between Mobile Legends usage and academic performance

among Grade 10 students at Calubian National High School. This study will be based on the

following key elements:

4

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents a review of concepts, principles, published and unpublished

materials, and other research studies, which are related to the present study and served as the

resources and basis for the analysis and interpretation of data.

Related Studies

Online games influence many Filipino students in many ways. According to Jana (2020)

playing online games for long hours can affect the student’s performance in school. Studies have

shown that a higher amount of time spent in playing onscreen games can be associated with

lower academic performance. A survey has shown that 47% of heavy online players got poor

grades, while 23% of light users performed better than them. However, some study said it

enhances the student creativity and critical thinking. The action in the online games prepares the

gamers to make smart decisions in split seconds. Furthermore, they need acute attention to cope

with unexpected changes in the game.

In recent times, the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang game has gained immense popularity

among the youth. It is believed by some researchers that this game can have a positive impact on

student learning and education as a whole. According to Bautista (2019), Mobile Legends: Bang

Bang offers players an opportunity to enhance and refine skills that are applicable in real-life

situations. Examples of such skills include strategic thinking, critical thinking, and multitasking.

By actively participating in the game, players can develop and nurture these skills, ultimately

benefiting their overall cognitive abilities.

8

Achieving the victory is the primary objective of this game. Preparing a good plan design using

the ideas in your head can really be a good help to achieve it. Together with teammates

connected by a server, the game also promotes teamwork and social connectivity.

In Jana's (2020) research, it is stated that participating in online games like Mobile Legends:

Bang Bang can enhance the problem-solving abilities of students. The game incorporates

strategic elements that players must understand in order to succeed, stimulating their mental

engagement and enabling them to make effective decisions when faced with challenging

circumstances. Additionally, the game often presents time constraints, which promote the

development of quick thinking and decision-making skills. Furthermore, various studies have

indicated that playing online games like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang can foster the creativity of

students.

Research has demonstrated that engaging in online games, particularly Multiplayer Online

Battle Arena (MOBA) games, can enhance an individual's eye-hand coordination skills. These

games place significant cognitive demands on the brain as they require strategic planning,

selective attention, sensorimotor skills, and teamwork (Kershner, 2020). Consequently, players

of such games exhibit improved information processing speed, allocate greater cognitive

resources to visual stimuli, and effectively distribute limited cognitive resources across

consecutive stimuli over time.

Furthermore, online games like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang can serve as a source of

stress relief. Some students play these games purely for enjoyment and excitement, using them as

a coping mechanism after facing stressful situations, such as a heavy academic workload (Scott,

2020).
9

However, a study conducted by Garcia (2020) revealed that students who become addicted

to Mobile Legends: Bang Bang may experience negative academic consequences. Excessive

dedication to playing the game can result in neglecting school activities, leading to lower grades

and, in some cases, failing grades. Moreover, addiction to the game can contribute to

deteriorating learning abilities and concentration problems among students.

Tumbokon (2020) found a negative relationship between academic achievement and the

overall time spent playing video games. Students addicted to online games tend to engage in

arguments with teachers, have frequent conflicts with friends, and achieve lower grades

compared to those who play less frequently. Some students even admitted to skipping their

homework in favor of playing the game.

Additionally, Dumrique and Castillo (2019) emphasized that while unexpected learning

can occur through playing online games, improper usage can lead to distractions in school. The

studies highlighted the vulnerability of the human brain to disruption, emphasizing that playing

such games can have a significant impact on students' academic performance.
