CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background and Rationale

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic continuously impacts

educational systems around the world and this paradigm shift is changing

dramatically in the Philippines. With this, teachers’ roles are critical in ensuring that

students learn successfully. The occurrence of the COVID-19 put schools, teachers,

students, parents, and other stakeholders to the test. (Organization for Economic Co-

operation and Development, 2020).

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the education sector

worldwide, including in the Philippines. As schools adapted to the "new normal,"

teachers faced numerous challenges in ensuring the continuity of education while

prioritizing the well-being of their students (Llego, 2021). However, the mental health

of teachers themselves has often been overlooked in the process.

Teachers play a critical role in the learning achievements of students. This

makes the mental health and wellbeing of teachers equally as important as the

students they teach. If teachers are not mentally well, their capacity to teach and

support children is reduced (Dabrowski, 2022). Teachers in the new normal have their

own self-care practices in order to cope any problem they may encounter.

Calubian National High School, located in the municipality of Calubian, has

been no exception to these challenges. Teachers at the school have had to navigate the

transition to online and hybrid teaching methods, juggle additional responsibilities,

ii
and cope with increased workloads. The prolonged exposure to stress and the

demanding nature of their profession can have adverse effects on their mental health

and overall well-being.

The researchers decided to conduct this study, with the main purpose of

Recognizing the importance of supporting the mental health of teachers, it is crucial to

explore self-care practices that can serve as effective interventions. Investigating the

self-care practices of teachers at Calubian National High School, valuable insights can

be gained into their well-being and identify areas where mental health interventions

can be implemented.

Statement of the problem

This study primarily aimed to answer the following research questions:

1. What are the most self-care practices that teachers at Calubian National High

School applied?

2. What are the average self-care practices that teachers at Calubian National

High School applied?

3. What are the least self-care practices that teachers at Calubian National High

School applied?

i
Conceptual Framework

The diagram presented below depicts the study's flow and the process of

determining the self-care practices of teachers in the new normal. The researcher's

objectives serve as the input for the study. The survey method was utilized to obtain

the desired output, employing a questionnaire as the primary research instrument.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The sole goal of this study is to determine the self-care practices of teachers at

Calubian National High School in the new normal. This study’s limitation is that it

only focuses on teachers. Calubian National High School served as the study’s

location. The time frame for this study was from (May 22, 2023), through (May 29,

2023).
