B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson

Questions:
Do you wonder what those lights twinkling at night sky? What are those? What else can we
see beyond that dark night? Imagine that we are now travelling far into space. Look back at
the solar system. What would you see?
(EXPLORATION)
C. Presenting examples/ instances of the new lesson
The sun, the planets, and the asteroids make up the solar system. They are earth’s
neighbors in space. A planet is any one of the eight largest objects that travel around the
sun. In order of their distances from the sun, the inner planets are Mercury, Venus, the
Earth, and Mars. While the outer planets are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

(EXPLANATION)
D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills (I do)
The teacher will discuss the planets in the solar system.

THE INNER PLANETS

Mercury Mercury is the smallest planet. It is also the nearest to
the sun. It is named after the winged messenger god in
Roman mythology. The surface of Mercury is covered
by huge craters.
Venus Venus is both evening and morning star.
Planet Venus is named after the Roman goddess of
love and beauty. It appears to be brighter than any star
in the sky when it shines near sunset or sunrise
because it travels in an orbit smaller than the earth.
Earth Earth is our home planet. The earth is the only planet
where living organisms are known to exist. The earth’s
nearest neighbor is the moon.
Mars Mars is named after the Roman god of war. When
viewed through a telescope, Mars appears like a red
sphere with unusual markings and polar caps. The

surface of Mars abounds with craters and volcanoes.
THE OUTER PLANETS
Jupiter Jupiter is one of the four frozen planets that orbits after
the asteroid belt which is hundreds of millions of
kilometers away. It is named after the Roman ruler of
the gods. It is a ball of whirling gases and liquids with no
solid surface. Stripes of rising hydrogen clouds drawn
into rings due to rapid rotation.
Saturn Saturn is named after the Roman god of agriculture. It is
also called the ringed planet. Saturn is made up of
gases, mostly hydrogen and helium-same gases that
make your balloon fly.
Uranus Uranus is named after the Greek sky-god. Seen through
a telescope, Uranus looks like a tiny green disc against
the black sky. Uranus spins on its side and rolls like a
ball as it moves on its orbit.
Neptune Neptune is named after the Roman sea-god. It is
considered the twin planet of Uranus. The features of
Neptune are almost the same as those of Uranus.

E. Developing mastery (We do)

The teacher will call on some pupils to assist her in decoding the clues and filling in the
puzzle boxes with the correct answers.

G. Making generalizations and abstractions about the lesson

The teacher guides the pupils to generalize as follows:
 The sun, the planets, and the asteroids make up the solar system.
 The inner planets are Mercury, Venus, the Earth, and Mars while the outer planets
are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
