INTRODUCTION
Learning Objectives:
Explain how Earth, the moon, and the sun revolve.
Describe the position of Earth, the moon and the sun during solar and lunar eclipses
through model.
Evaluate some beliefs and practices in relation to eclipse.

Have you ever experienced solar eclipse? a lunar eclipse? Did you already heard other people
saying that it's a sign of bad luck?
For this week, we will deal with eclipses, its types, and the beliefs and practices of people from
different parts of the world regarding eclipses.

DEVELOPMENT

ECLIPSES
Why do eclipses occur?

During the last quarter, you have learned that

some objects are opaque; that is, they do not allow
light to pass through them. If an opaque object is
placed in the path of light, a darks area forms
behind the object called shadow. A shadow has two
parts: umbra and penumbra. The inner darker part
of the shadow where the light is totally blocked is
called the umbra. The lighter portion of the shadow
where light is partially blocked is called the
penumbra.
Fig. 2 the figure above shows that when an object is in
front of a light source
An eclipse occurs when a celestial body like Earth or the moon blocks the sun's rays, casting
shadows on another celestial body. Earth and moon are opaque, so when they are illuminated by
the sun, each body's shadow extends out into space, away from the sun.
As Earth revolves around the sun, the moon also revolves around the Earth. From this, two
possible scenarios occur: (1) the moon is between Earth and the sun---the solar eclipse; or (2)
Earth is between the moon and the sun---the lunar eclipse.
Let us discuss the difference between the solar and lunar eclipse.
SOLAR ECLIPSE
Solar eclipse happens if the moon is between Earth and the sun, the moon blocks the sun's
rays and the shadow of the moon falls on Earth's surface. It can only take place when the moon is
at new moon and when it is near one of the nodes of its orbit. It can be seen from Earth during
daytime. There are three kinds of solar eclipses: total, annular and partial solar eclipses.
TYPES OF SOLAR ECLIPSE

A. Total Solar Eclipse happens when the

moon exactly covers the sun's
photosphere (the sun's visible surface).
The area of Earth's surface which
happens to be at the umbra of the moon
will experience this type of solar eclipse.

B. Annular Solar Eclipse is a type of

solar eclipse in which the moon's disk is
seen to be surrounded with a very thin

Amazing, isn't it?
LUNAR ECLIPSE
Lunar eclipse occurs when the moon moves within the shadow of the Earth. This is possible
only during the full moon phase. A lunar eclipse can be seen from Earth at night. Lunar eclipses are
not as frequent as solar eclipses. There are at least two solar eclipses every year.
There are two types of lunar eclipse: penumbral lunar eclipse, partial lunar eclipse and total
lunar eclipse.
TYPES OF LUNAR ECLIPSE

A. Penumbral Lunar Eclipse happens

when the moon passes only through the
penumbra of Earth's shadow. It is the
most common type, however, it is
difficult to notice because the full moon
darkens only slightly.

B. Partial Lunar Eclipse happens when

the only a part of moon passes through
the umbra of Earth's shadow. The rest of
the full moon passes through the
penumbra. This happens because the
alignment of the sun, the moon, and
Earth is not perfect.

C. Total Lunar Eclipse happens when

the moon passes through the umbra of
Earth's shadow. This happens because of

If you are in Australia, parts of the western US, western South America, or in South-East Asia, you will
see the Super Flower Full Moon totally eclipsed and turn a shade of red for about 14 minutes during
this total lunar eclipse, weather permitting on May 26, 2021.

ENGAGEMENT
People from different parts of Earth have watched eclipses with a mixture of fear and
amazement. In the past, there were different speculations about what an eclipse was and why
it occurred. Different cultures also had different stories in which people tried to explain
eclipses. They also had different beliefs and practices about eclipses.
Here are some of the beliefs and practices among people according to Scoopwhoop.com:
1. A popular superstition in India is to avoid eating during an eclipse.
Cooking, eating, drinking are avoided during the eclipse period as the food goes 'bad' during
the eclipse.
2. In US, people believe that an eclipse is a sign of the forthcoming of an apocalypse.
Scholars find its source from the Bible. According to Joel 2:31: "The Sun will turn to darkness,
and the Moon to blood before the great and dreadful day of the Lord comes."
3. In Tibet, people think that good and bad deeds are multiplied during an eclipse.
4. For the Batammaliba people of Togo and Benin in Western Africa, an eclipse meant that the
Sun and Moon are fighting.
The Batammaliba people would pray so that the celestial bodies resolve their conflict.
5. In many parts of the world, pregnant women are advised to stay indoors as it is believed
that the dark moon will curse the unborn child.
They are also not supposed to use knives or sharp metal objects fearing that it will leave a
birthmark on the body of the unborn child.
6. In India, it is believed that if you cut yourself during an eclipse you bleed for a longer time
and it can leave a scar for a lifetime.
