NOTES Inv. 7 Eclipses / / p.

eclipse: when one celestial body moves into

the shadow of another celestial body and is
either partially or totally blocked by it
as the Earth revolves around the Sun and the
Moon revolves around the Earth, they
occasionally align so the sunlight is blocked
eclipses are predictable because of how
scientists understand the motion of the Earth
and Moon around the Sun

solar eclipse: the Moon blocks the light from the
Sun resulting in the total or partial disappearance
of the Sun, as viewed from Earth
• the Moon must be in its New Moon phase
lunar eclipse: when the Earth blocks the Sun's
light from reaching the Moon
• the Moon must be in its Full Moon phase
most objects in the solar system are in regular
and predictable motion; these motions explain
phenomena such as day, year, phases of the
moon, eclipses

2 parts of a shadow
• penumbra: lighter outer region of a shadow
• umbra: darker inner region of a shadow
If a person is in the penumbra during a solar
eclipse, they'll see a partial eclipse
If a person is in the umbra during a solar
eclipse, they'll see a total eclipse
NEVER LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN,
ESPECIALLY DURING AN ECLIPSE...IT CAN
DAMAGE YOUR EYES
