Eclipses
CELESTIAL SPHERE
- is a tool of astronomers for tracking the
movement of stars and other heavenly or
celestial bodies
1. What happens when the
moon crosses the ecliptic
and it is a full or a new
moon?

2. What is ecliptic?
ECLIPTIC
-is the apparent path of the sun in
the sky, or the celestial sphere as
seen from earth
TYPES OF ECLIPSES

Solar Eclipse
Lunar Eclipse
1. SOLAR ECLIPSE (DAY-TIME)
-occurs when the moon aligns with the sun,
causing the moon to partially or totally
block your view of the sun
-is not seen all throughout the world, there
at least 2-5 solar eclipses around the world
per year
-for you to see a solar eclipse, the shadow
of the moon has to cover the place where
you are
HOW A SOLAR ECLIPSE OCCURS
MOON HAS THREE KINDS OF SHADOWS
DEPENDING ON ITS POSITION;

UMBRA
-the darker inner shadow of the
moon

PENUMBRA
-the outer, less dark shadow
THE SHADOWS MADE BY THE
PERIGEE
-the nearest position from earth

APOGEE
-the farthest position from earth
-when the moon is as its apogee, the edges
of its shadow that form the umbra extend
farther and meet at a point, forming a less
dark version of itself, called the ANTUMBRA
HOW AN ANTUMBRA FORMS
TYPES OF SOLAR
ECLIPSES;

• total solar eclipse

• annular solar eclipse
• partial solar eclipse
TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE
-happens when the moon totally
covers the sun and only the wispy
corona around the sun can be
seen
-one of the rare solar eclipse
-can be seen from earth when the
umbra hits the surface of earth on
its path of totality
CORONA
-is the outer atmosphere of the sun
that is not often seen because
of the intense energy released
by the surface of the sun
WHAT HAPPENS DURING A TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE
ANNULAR SOLAR ECLIPSE
-is what people see on Earth when
the moon’s disk does not
completely cover the sun during
an eclipse
-moon-sun and earth are all aligned
-you will also see an ANNULUS or a
ring of fire around the moon
WHAT HAPPENS DURING AN ANNULAR SOLAR
ECLIPSE
 PARTIAL SOLAR ECLIPSE
-happens when the moon is large
enough to cover the whole
sun
-it thus covers only a part of the
view of the sun
WHAT HAPPENS DURING PARTIAL SOLAR ECLIPSE
2. LUNAR ECLIPSE (NIGHT-TIME)
-occurs when the shadow of
Earth covers the full moon,
and the sunlight hitting the
moon is blocked by Earth
HOW A LUNAR ECLIPSE OCCURS
TYPES OF LUNAR ECLIPSES;
• Total lunar eclipse
• Partial lunar eclipse
• Penumbral lunar eclipse
TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE
-the moon is totally covered by the
umbral shadow of earth
-happens during a full moon and
only when the moon, sun and
earth are aligned
PARTIAL LUNAR ECLIPSE
-the moon is full and is covered
partially by the umbra
-happens when the moon-earth and
sun are not entirely aligned
PENUMBRAL LUNAR ECLIPSE
-the actual eclipse may not be
noticeable to the amateur or
inexperienced astronomer
