Eclipses
CELESTIAL SPHERE
- is a tool of astronomers for tracking the
movement of stars and other heavenly or
celestial bodies
1. What happens when the
moon crosses the ecliptic
and it is a full or a new
moon?
2. What is ecliptic?
ECLIPTIC
-is the apparent path of the sun in
the sky, or the celestial sphere as
seen from earth
TYPES OF ECLIPSES
Solar Eclipse
Lunar Eclipse
1. SOLAR ECLIPSE (DAY-TIME)
-occurs when the moon aligns with the sun,
causing the moon to partially or totally
block your view of the sun
-is not seen all throughout the world, there
at least 2-5 solar eclipses around the world
per year
-for you to see a solar eclipse, the shadow
of the moon has to cover the place where
you are
HOW A SOLAR ECLIPSE OCCURS
MOON HAS THREE KINDS OF SHADOWS
DEPENDING ON ITS POSITION;
UMBRA
-the darker inner shadow of the
moon
PENUMBRA
-the outer, less dark shadow
THE SHADOWS MADE BY THE
PERIGEE
-the nearest position from earth
APOGEE
-the farthest position from earth
-when the moon is as its apogee, the edges
of its shadow that form the umbra extend
farther and meet at a point, forming a less
dark version of itself, called the ANTUMBRA
HOW AN ANTUMBRA FORMS
