What is an eclipse?

An eclipse occurs any time something passes in front of the Sun, blocking its light. This
can be the Earth or the Moon. Here on Earth, we can experience two kinds of eclipse, solar eclipse
and lunar eclipse.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF ECLIPSE

1. Solar Eclipse

When the Moon casts a shadow on the Earth, causing the sun to go dark.
The Moon comes between the Sun and Earth and casts a shadow on part of Earth. Solar
eclipse happen during New Moon. The arrangement of the celestial body is sun, moon
and Earth (SME).

2. Lunar Eclipse

When the Earth casts a shadow on the moon, causing the moon to go dark.
Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon and casts a shadow on the Moon. Lunar
eclipse happen during Full Moon. The arrangement of the celestial body is sun, Earth and
moon (SEM).

SHADOW VS. ECLIPSE

What is the difference between shadow and eclipse?

The main difference between shadow and eclipse is that shadow is an area where direct
light from a light source cannot reach due to obstruction by an object and eclipse is an
astronomical event where one body hides another.

TYPES OF SHADOW DURING ECLIPSE

1. Umbra- It is the dark inner portion of the shadow cone.

2. Penumbra - the lighter outer portion of the shadow.
3. Antumbra - part of the Moon's shadow that extends beyond the umbra. An observer
in this region experiences an annular eclipse,

A solar eclipse happens when
the moon gets in the way of the sun’s
light and casts its shadow on Earth.
That means during the day, the moon
moves over the sun and it gets dark.

But not everyone experiences every solar eclipse. Getting a chance to see a total solar
eclipse is rare. The moon’s shadow on Earth isn’t very big, so only a small portion of places on
Earth will see it. You have to be on the sunny side of the planet when it happens. You also have
to be in the path of the moon’s shadow.
On average, the same spot on Earth only gets to see a solar eclipse for a few minutes
about every 375 years!

Different Types of Solar Eclipse

Sun Moon Earth

1. TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE

It can only occur if you are at the exact spot within the moon’s umbra or you’ll need to be
on a very narrow track on the Earth’s surface (known as the path of totality) to witness a total
solar eclipse. For a total eclipse to take place, the sun, moon & Earth must be in a direct line.
People standing in the umbra will see a total eclipse.

C.ROJAS, OMNHS 2020

2. ANNULAR ECLIPSE

It happens when the moon is farthest from Earth. When the moon is further from
Earth, it appears smaller, as a result, it doesn’t block the entire view of the sun. The moon
in front of the sun resembles a dark disk on top of a larger sun-coloured disk and creates
what looks like a ring around the moon.

3. PARTIAL SOLAR ECLIPSE

This occurs when the sun, moon and Earth don’t line up exactly. It is visible if you
are in the penumbra of the shadow. Only some of the moon will be shadowed.

4. HYBRID SOLAR ECLIPSE

A hybrid solar eclipse is a bit of all three of the other types of eclipse: a partial solar eclipse,
then a total or annular solar eclipse. Depending on where you stand in the eclipse track on the
surface of Earth, it appears as a total solar eclipse, whereas at other points it appears as an
annular solar eclipse. Each side of either totality or annularity you see another type of solar
eclipse – a partial solar eclipse.

Hybrid solar eclipses are very rare and happen about once every 10 years. When is the next
hybrid solar eclipse? It’s on April 20, 2023, in Australia and Timor Leste.

During a lunar eclipse, Earth gets in the way of the sun’s light hitting the moon. That
means that during the night, a full moon fades away as Earth’s shadow covers it up. The moon
can also look reddish because Earth’s atmosphere absorbs the other colors while it bends some
sunlight toward the moon. Sunlight bending through the atmosphere and absorbing other colors
is also why sunsets are orange and red. During a total lunar eclipse, the moon is shining from all
the sunrises and sunsets occurring on Earth!

Different Types of Solar Eclipse

Sun Earth Moon

1. Total Lunar Eclipse – when the Moon passes completely into the Umbra, or total
shadow of the Earth.

2. Partial Lunar Eclipse – Occur when the Moon does not fully move into the Umbra.

C.ROJAS, OMNHS 2020

3. Penumbral Lunar Eclipse – When the moon passes only through the penumbra, or
partial shadow. They are barely visible.

Why don’t we have a lunar eclipse every month?

You might be wondering why we don’t have a lunar eclipse every month as the moon
orbits Earth. It’s true that the moon goes around Earth every month, but it doesn’t always get in
Earth’s shadow. The moon’s path around Earth is tilted compared to Earth’s orbit around the sun.
The moon can be behind Earth but still get hit by light from the sun.

A lunar eclipse is a special event it doesn’t happen every month. Unlike solar eclipses, lots
of people get to see each lunar eclipse. If you live on the nighttime half of Earth when the eclipse
happens, you’ll be able to see it.

Remembering the Difference

It’s easy to get these two types of eclipses mixed up. An easy way to remember the
difference is in the name. The name tells you what gets darker when the eclipse happens. In
a solar eclipse, the sun gets darker. In a lunar eclipse, the moon gets darker.
