SHADOWS AND ECLIPSES

Let’s Play My Shadow !

PROCEDURE:
1. Position yourself in a close room or any area of
your house.
2. Get a flashlight or anything that can produce light.
Let somebody hold the flashlight and do shadow
play as shown in Figure 1.
3. Focus the flashlight closer to your hand .Observe
what happened to the size of your hand on the
projected area.
4. This time, change the distance of the flashlight, move the flashlight
away from your hand . Observe what happened to the size of your
hand. Figure 1.Shadow play.
GUIDE QUESTIONS
DIRECTIONS: Underline the word or phrases to complete the thought of each observation below.
1. (Shadow ,Light ) is projected on the wall when hand is focused by a flashlight.
2. The shadow is formed (when an object blocks light , when an object absorbed light).
3. The shadow becomes (bigger, smaller ) when the source of light is away from the hand.
4. The shadow becomes (bigger, smaller ) when the source of light is close or near from the hand.
QUICK CHECK!

When a light source is blocked by an object, a shadow of that object is cast. The shadow will darken the object on
which it falls.
The distance of the object from the light source affects the size of its shadow. When an object is closer to the light
source, its shadow will appear big. But when it is farther from the light source, its shadow is smaller.
The occurrence of shadows is an ordinary phenomenon that you experience every day. Shadows can be seen
anywhere. Sometimes, the shadow appears bigger than the original object, other times smaller.

When shadows are formed on astronomical objects like sun, earth and moon a darkening effect is observed. This
phenomenon is called an eclipse. Sun gives off light. As the different members of the solar system move around the Sun,
they block the light from the Sun and form shadows. What this means is that planets have shadows, and even their moons
have shadows, too. But we cannot see the shadows that they form because we are far from them. The only shadows that
we can observe are the shadows of the Moon and Earth. Earth has moved along its orbit, taking the Moon along. Eclipse
happened when the three astronomical object, the Moon, Sun and Earth are perfectly aligned.

SOLAR ECLIPSE happens when the Moon comes directly between the Sun and Earth. (Sun Moon Earth)

Figure 2 Where is the position of the

moon relative to the Sun and Earth
during a solar eclipse? Image
source: Grade 7 Learner’s Manual
In the moon's shadow, this dim external
area is the penumbra, while the darker inner part
is the umbra.
If you are standing within the umbra of the
moon's shadow, you will see the Sun disappear
from your view. The surroundings seem like it is an
early night. For this situation, you are witnessing a
total solar eclipse. Solar eclipse happen during
new moon.
In comparison, in the event that you are in
the penumbra, you will see the Sun halfway
covered by the moon. There are no sensational
changes in the environmental factors; there is no
recognizable darkening of sunlight. For this
Figure 3 situation, you are observing a partial solar eclipse.

LUNAR ECLIPSE happens when the Moon is directly on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun or when the
Earth comes directly between the Sun and Moon. (Sun Earth Moon)

Figure 4. Where is the position of the Earth relative to the Sun and Moon during a lunar eclipse? Image source: Grade 7 Learner’s Manual

The appearance of the Moon is dependent on its location in the Earth’s shadow. When the entire Moon is within
the umbra, it will look totally dark. At this time you will observe a total lunar eclipse. But when the Moon passes only
through a part of the umbra, a partial lunar eclipse will be observed. A part of the Moon will look dark while the rest
will be lighter.
In reality, eclipses do not occur every month. There are only about three solar eclipses and three lunar eclipses
in a year. What could be the explanation for this? The answer lies in the rotation of the moon. The orbit is tilted by 5
degrees from the plane of the orbit of the Earth. As the moon moves around the Earth, it is some of the time higher or
lower than the Earth. In these situations, the shadow of the moon doesn't hit the outside of the Earth. Accordingly, no
eclipses will happen. Eclipses only happen when the moon lines up with the Sun and Earth.

FILL ME IN!
DIRECTIONS: Read the paragraph carefully and filling in the blank with an appropriate word from the box below.
PAINT ME AN ECLIPSE!

DIRECTIONS: On the box below, draw the two types of eclipses: Solar and Lunar, with their corresponding labels.
(Note: You may also color your drawings).

Facts, Myths, and Superstitions
All Tagalogs call eclipses as laho. Others call it
eklepse (pronounce as written). Older adults would tell
you that during laho or eklepse, the Sun and the Moon are
eaten by a giant snake called BAKUNAWA. The only
way to bring them back is to create a thunderous noise.
The BAKUNAWA gets irritated with the noise and spews
out the Sun and the Moon back to the people.
In Science, explanations are supported with
evidence. Beliefs related to eclipses, such as the Sun
being swallowed by BAKUNAWA or the increase of
harmful microorganisms during an eclipse, are passed on
by adults to young children. But until now, no proof has
been offered to show that they are correct.
However, some beliefs have scientific bases. For
example, it is terrible to look directly at the Sun during a
solar eclipse. Doing so will damage your eyes. This is
true. Even if only a thin crescent of the Sun is left
uncovered by the Moon, it will still be too bright for you
to observe. It is 10 000 times brighter than the Full

certainly harm your retina. So, if you ever watch a solar eclipse,
be ready with a solar filter or welder's goggles to protect your
eyes.
WORDSTORM (2 points each)
DIRECTIONS: Find the five keywords and connect the letters to form a word using the across and down clues.

Across
1. It is the result when the Moon’s shadow crosses the Earth’s surface.
2. It represents the God of the Underworld.

Downward
3. Accordingly, the Sun and the Moon are eaten by a BAKUNAWA known as a giant ____.
4. It gives light to every living organism.
5. It is the Tagalog term for the eclipse.
I BELIEVE!
Objective: After the activity, the student should be to evaluate some beliefs about eclipses.

Procedure:
1. Interview members of your family such as your lola, lolo, auntie or uncle including your parents and siblings.
Ask them about some beliefs and practices being carried on from generation to generation in the family regarding
the occurrence of eclipse, summarize and list them down in the 20first column of Table 1. Same or related
answers must be written in the same. column.
2. Decide if any scientific fact supports the stated superstitious beliefs. If yes, put a check under the column of
Evident. If no scientific explanation that can help the views, check under Not Evident.
