QUARTER 4
Module 5: Eclipse
(Week 6)

MARITES P. RAMOS
Teacher I
San Quintin National High School
What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written to help you understand how eclipse
happens. In Module 4, you have learned about the interesting occurrence of
changing seasons. As the Earth rotates, it also travels around the Sun.The
revolution of the Earth around the Sun make the distribution of light vary that
is the reason why we have different seasons. In this lesson,we will understand
how the Earth, the Moon and the Sun’s revolution affect each other that give
rise in another phenomena called eclipse.
After going through this module, you are expected to:
● Explain how solar and lunar eclipses occur using models.

What I Know

Directions: Fill the missing letters to complete the word or words

in a sentence.
1. The darkest part of the sun in lunar eclipse is called the U__ __R__ .
2-3. A solar eclipse happens when the M__ O__ blocks the view
of the S__N.
4. When only part of the moon enters the Earth’s umbra is called
P__ __U__ __RA eclipse.
5-6. TO__ __L eclipse is when the entire M__ __N blocks the view of the
sun.
7. A lunar eclipse happens when the EA__ T__ shadow falls on the moon.
8-9 A total S__L__R eclipse occurs when the U__BR__ of the moon’s
shadow on surface of the Earth.
10. The lighter portion of a shadow is called PE__ __M__R__.

Lesson

1 Eclipses
What’s In

There have been many presumed stories to convince people about

eclipses. This great phenomenon that has puzzled many in the past
generations have brought drastic effect in the lives of many civilizations. In
fact, plenty of interesting misconceptions about how and why eclipses
happened started the burning curiosity to dig up the hole in finding the
answers and to eradicate the traditional beliefs of our ancestors.
Apparently, people now perceive eclipses as one grand event in an
endless space. However, it is difficult to identify ancient and modern activities
which are associated with eclipses. But, understanding the scientific bases
behind the occurrence of eclipse is valuable to correct the beliefs and practices
1
of people, mostly to issues involving human activities.

What’s New

Would you be afraid, if on a bright sunny day the sky suddenly

becomes dark? What comes into your mind immediately? Let us get started!
Directions: Rearrange the letters to get the correct word or words being described.
1. The eclipse of the Sun is called_____________________.
R O L A S
2. The dark shadow cast by a solar eclipse_____________________.
M U B A R
3. It is the casting of a shadow by one heavenly body upon another.__________.
L I P S E C E
4. The eclipse of the moon is called_______________.
R U L A N
5. The partial shadow in an eclipse ___________________________.
B R A E P M U N

What is It

Have you seen an eclipse ? Did you have ideas now which are
relevant to how eclipses happen? Let us now learn.

 The Sun,Moon and Earth are continuously moving in their respective

orbits- the Earth around the Sun and the Moon around the Earth.
 A shadow is formed when light from the Sun is completely or partially
blocked by a celestial object, or heavenly body.
.

The moon revolves around the Earth while the Earth revolves around the
Sun. There are times when three heavenly bodies align on a straight line. When this
happens, an eclipse occurs. An eclipse takes place when Earth or the moon passes
through a shadow. A casting shadow has two parts: the umbra and the penumbra.
The umbra is the dark portion of a shadow while the penumbra is its lighter portion.
Eclipses are of two types: solar and lunar.

2
A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Sun and the
Earth. This type of eclipse happens during a new moon where the moon’s shadow
is cast on Earth.A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth is between the Sun and
the full moon.As a result ,the planet casts shadow over the moon. In the case of
the moon’s shadow the lighter region is the penumbra and the darker inner
region is the umbra.Fantastic! Now, you have scientific ideas about an
eclipse, let us learn more about the difference and similarities of solar and
lunar eclipses.
