INTRODUCTION

This is a practical on contouring and section in engineering survey which was done by using a
dumpy level to measure the levels or the spot heights and using a surveyors tape to measure the
horizontal distances between them at the center of the road.
OBJECTIVES
The objective of this practical was for practical assessment for the course engineering survey.
This was done to give the students a feel of onsite work or have a feel of the dumpy level is used.
METHODOLOGY
In order to plot a longitudinal section, the following field work is necessary:
1. Leveling must be carried out along the centerline, taken at every specified interval whether or not it
signifies a change in gradient. In addition, levels are taken at all sudden or abrupt changes of gradient.
2. Horizontal distance measurements must be made between all the points at which levels were taken.
The measurements are continuous and accumulated from the first point such that all points have running
chainage.
3. The fieldwork is reduced and all checks applied. The table below is an example of a fieldwork and
reduced levels of a section of a road
