Job Summary
Job Title: Advocacy Officer

Hours: 32 hours a week (4 days a week)

Contract length: 12 months

Salary: $42,000 XCD per year (based on 4 days a week)

Reports to: Director, Project Management

Location: Innovation Hub, National ICT Centre, Industrial Complex, St Kitts

About Lake Health and Wellbeing


Lake Health and Wellbeing is a registered NGO in St Kitts and Nevis. We focus on improving
the health and wellbeing of our local, regional and online community through research,
public health interventions, events, campaigns and by offering public health services to
small organisations.

We will be starting a new 12-month project to advocate for policies that promote healthy
drinking and we are recruiting an Advocacy Officer to support the work of this project.

Role Description
As an Advocacy Officer, you will assist with the development, organisation and
implementation of a range of activities to advocate for government policies and decisions
related to healthy food and beverages. You will also assist with the implementation of a
media and education campaign focusing on the health harms of unhealthy food and
beverage choices and what all of society can do to improve the public’s health. Specifically,

your role will involve disseminating campaign material and content; organising virtual and
in-person events; representing our organisation at events and meetings, and in the media;
developing and nurturing relationships with all stakeholders; and implementing our social
media campaign. Finally, you will take the lead on creating a network of local and regional
advocates from both the Federation and wider OECS.

Main Responsibilities
Strategy
• Assist in developing and implementing our advocacy campaign
• Track the effectiveness of all communications, advocacy activities and media exposure
and make suggestions for improvement through regular advocacy and communication
reports
• Use knowledge of the current political environment to inform advocacy and public
education actions

Outreach and Advocacy


• Form a network of advocates, manage the network and facilitate the development of an
agreed advocacy strategy with partners within that network
• Develop relationships with key local stakeholders to achieve our policy and campaign
goals
• Act as a spokesperson for our campaign with the media, government and other
stakeholders and thus be the first point of contact for any enquiries
• Develop and maintain communication with advocates and stakeholders in the OECS and
internationally
• Lead on media engagement, identifying media opportunities, organising press briefings
and interviews, providing the media with evidence-based information and responding to
media enquiries quickly and accurately
• Attend meetings with the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Finance and other key
stakeholders
• Assist with the development of policy briefings, information packs and other advocacy
resources
• Take the lead on the collection of data for a public opinion survey and supervising
volunteers as they go out in the community to implement the survey

Communication
• Assist with dissemination of communication products including audio, visual, printed
and other digital materials for our website, social media, media campaign and other
platforms
• Work with the project team to develop health messages for our advocacy and public
sensitization campaign
• Clearly articulate our campaign message to the public and government with clear calls-
to-action.
• Assist in writing progress reports and make recommendations as appropriate.

• Deliver presentations, organise a series of virtual events and in-person events and write
articles, blogs and social media posts that contribute to us achieving our project’s goals
• Maintain contact with attendees and participants of all events, thanking them for
attending events, informing them of future events and informing them of all project
activities
• Create a regular newsletter, build a mailing list of supporters and keep them informed of
all activities through the newsletter

Other

• To assist with other advocacy and communications duties as required

Person Specification
Qualifications

• A first degree in either communications, administration, policy or a health-related


field

Knowledge, Experience and Skills

• At least 2 years’ experience working in Public Health, health policy, advocacy, or


communications

• Experience of developing, implementing and managing advocacy and campaigning


activities

• Good understanding of policy development in St Kitts and Nevis

• Knowledge of the use of policy to change health behaviour, in particular globally


agreed policy initiatives to tackle NCDs.

• A track record of successful stakeholder and public engagement

• A track record of writing and editing articles, website content, reports and policy
briefs

• Experience delivering oral presentations, participating in media interviews, and using


social media to reach a target audience with key messages

• Excellent communication and project management skills

• Ability to meet firm deadlines

• Competent in MS Office particularly Word, Excel PowerPoint, Outlook

• Experience using Zoom and conducting live virtual events

• Willingness to work from home
