• Suggestions for Use
• Brainstorming sheets for Future 3rd graders, 4th graders, and 5th graders.
• Final draft paper for both single page letter and two page letter.
• Thank You Notes

Suggestions for Use:

Prep:
• Choose and print the brainstorming sheet that matches your grade level.
• Copy enough sheets for each of your students.
• Make copies of the final draft paper options.
Day #1
• Group your students into groups of 4 or 5.
• Give each group a large piece of construction paper.
• Have each group brainstorm some of their favorite moments, activities, and lessons
from the year on the construction paper.
• Give students a chance to share whole class and add to their lists.
• Have students remember back to the first day of school. How did they feel? What
do they wish they had known about being a ___ grader? Give students time to share
in their small groups and as a whole class.
• Explain to students that they are each going to write a letter to a student who will
be in your class next year.
• Pass out the “Dear Future ___ Grader” brainstorming sheets.
• Quickly go through each section with students and then give them time, independent
of their group, to fill in each box on their paper. Give them time to share with their
groups and add to their papers.
• Explain that tomorrow they will be taking their information and organizing it into a
letter.

Day #2
• Explain to students that today they will be using their ideas to write the rough draft
of their letter. Each section of their brainstorming sheet could be a paragraph, or
they could combine sections. They may also need to decide on WHICH sections are
most important for a future ___ grader to know on the first day of school.
• Give students time to write their rough drafts.

Day #3 – Finish writing rough drafts, revise, and edit.

Day #4 – Give students the choice of one-page or two-page final draft paper and
give them time to write.
Day #5 – Arrange students in small groups to share the final draft of their letters.
After sharing, have students fold them and put them into envelops addressing them to
“Future ___ Grader”. Collect and save for the beginning of the next school year.

*** Thank You Notes – Make several copies of the Thank You Notes and let students
write them to teachers, staff members, and classmates thanking them for a great year.
