more of never before seen or heard art forms from the countryside have made
known and have become renowned. The seeming isolation and distance of
many communities in far flung regions have kept the beauty and significance of
countless forms of Philippine art.
This lesson will teach us everything about arts produced by Filipino artists
rooted from their own culture and tradition. Various contemporary art practices
from every region will also be included.

• Contemporary Art is the art of
today, produced by artists who are
living in the twenty-first century.
The 21st century will begin with 1
January 2001 and continue through
31 December 2100.

It draws on the movements of modern
art, including minimalism and
assemblage art, to create dynamic

BenCab (Benedicto Reyes
Cabrerais)
• Sabel is arguably the most identifiable work of Bencab. Sabel was
the name of a homeless vagrant who wandered the streets of
Bambang where the artist used to stay.
• The muse captured the mind of the artist as her makeshift clothing
(made out of throwaway plastic sheets) created different shapes
while she moved around, scavenging for food.
• Tatler Trivia: With a measure of 96" x 72" (244 cm x183 cm), Bencab's
2003 oil-on-canvas Sabel is one of the largest singular-figure pieces
from the artist's Sabel series. In 2015, it was sold for a
whopping PHP46.72 million during León Gallery's September
auction.
