contemporary art forms
and their practices from the
various regions.

◦ Define arts and contemporary arts

traditional arts

forms and practices from the various

ART
◦ It is the expression or application of
human creative skill and imagination,
producing works to be appreciated
primarily for their beauty or emotional
power.
◦ It is a form of creative activity such as
painting, music, literature, and dance.
◦ Is an imitation of life and the world
rendered beautifully, which gives
pleasure
ARISTOTLE
- Claimed that human have instincts
for imitation and harmony
- He describes that these instincts
are “lying deep in our nature”.
- He argued that human beings are
the “most imitative of living
creatures.
SUBJECT and MEDIUM are
the two elements of art
that help in experiencing
life, the world, and its
beauty.
When a Filipino artist paints a
farmer in the fields or writes
about a fisherman casting
nets, the subject is Filipino.
But the medium of expression
should portray the subject as
true to what it is in reality.
FORMS OF ARTISTIC
EXPRESSION:
1. PICTURE ( Drawing, Painting,
Printmaking, and Photography)-
this is a two- dimensional image of
various subjects ranging from real-
life images to the visually abstract.
2. SCULPTURE- this is a three-
dimensional artwork that may be
created using stone, marble,
wood, and concrete.
3. ARCHITECTURE- structures that are
meant to be used as shelter. The art of
architecture relies on the design and
purpose of the structure.
4. MUSIC- an art form that appeals to
the sense of hearing. Composed by
combining notes into harmony.
5. LITERATURE- an art form of language
through the combined use of words,
creating meaning and experience.
6. THEATER- an art form of performance.
Dramatic texts are portrayed on stage
by actors and actresses and are
enhanced by props, lights, and sounds.
7. CINEMA- technological translation of
theater. Special effects are utilized to
enhance the storytelling.
8. DANCE- the art of the human form.
The body is used, mobilized, and
choreographed in a specific time, form,
and space.
PHILIPPINE ART AS
FILIPINO
1. Filipino artist is caused by our
colonial history and migrant
reality.
2. Migrant reality of globalization
shaped Philippine art.
LEO BENESA- a Filipino poet, essayist,
and art critic.
- He said, “ the idea was that the
depiction of scenes of everyday life
and the surroundings without idealizing
them was closest in spirit to the Filipino
soul and native soil.”
- Describes Amorsolo’s works as the
“most expressive of the ethos of the
race and the predominantly
agricultural countryside.”
• An art can be considered Filipino art
when it depicts the Filipino way of
living.
• As times are quickly changing, brought
about by the advancement in
information, technology, and
communication, the identity of the
Filipino in the arts is one that is
constantly struggling and evolving.
Filipino artists try to bring the nation’s
experience and talent to the global
arena.
QUESTION:
What are the main
characteristics of a
Filipino
artwork?
QUESTION:
Is Philippine art
considered 100%
authentic art?
◦Many art critics still doubt the
Filipinoness of the artworks produced
by Filipinos.
◦Tradition where works and artists came
from makes one question its authenticity.
◦For example, our painters learned
Western painting tradition (canvas,
paintbrush, easel) blemishes the
authenticity of Filipino works.
Are the landscape paintings of Fernando
Amorsolo or the historical depictions of
Carlos Botong Francisco genuinely Filipino?
QUESTION:
Are the stories and poems
written in English by
N.V. Gonzales or Edith
Tiempo considered
Filipino?
◦In Philippine literature written in
English, the language itself doubt the
Filipino-ness of the literary work.
◦Many regarded the works written in
Filipino or regional languages more
Filipino than in English.
◦But as Filipinos learned and adapt the
usage of English usage, regardless of
language, is truly Filipino.
