Maths Starter Pack Letter 2023-24
Maths Starter Pack Letter 2023-24
This letter is for students who are planning to join the AGS Sixth Form in September 2023 and
who wish to study Maths or Further Maths A-Levels. A-level Maths is a big step up from GCSE in
terms of overall difficulty in terms of both the amount of work required to fully understand each
topic and the massively increased emphasis on algebra. To support this transition, we ask both
internal and external students to complete some work over the summer to maintain and improve
their algebra skills from GCSE.
Before students start at AGS in September, we expect them to complete the following tasks on
the MyMaths website. Details of how to access this website can be found later in this document.
Unfortunately, until students officially join the school in September, we cannot provide individual
logins to MyMaths, so their scores on these tasks will not be saved. We ask that students keep
their own record of their performance on these tasks to show their Maths teacher in September.
All students will also complete an algebra assessment at the beginning of the A-level course
which is based on the topics above. Scores on this assessment, as well as performance on the
MyMaths tasks will help us to support students as they begin the A-level course.
Regards,
Ben Disley
Head of Mathematics
3) Close the “My Portal” login box by clicking the X in the top right-hand corner (we cannot
issue individual logins to students until they enroll with us in September).
4) In the search bar at the top of the page, enter the Task Number for the task you are trying
to access (e.g. “1150”) and click the magnifying glass to search.
5) The task you require should be at the top of the search results. Before starting the task,
you can work through a lesson or watch a video that explains the topic. This is advised if
you are not fully confident with the topic.
You can also view the lesson or videos during the task by selecting the “Video” or “Menu”
options in the top right.
10) After you have marked both questions, you can select “Summary” to view your score.
You should be aiming to achieve at least 80% on each task. If you score below this, we
advise that you work through the lesson or video to improve your understanding and then
retry the task. Your scores will not be saved, so please keep a record of your results.
11) Selecting “Finish” will take you back to the task select screen and you can search for the
next task you wish to complete.
