5. Describing the attraction (site) The Plaza de Armas was originally the site of the Inca capital, Cusco. The Incas built a large temple called the
Coricancha on the site of the square. The Coricancha was made of gold and silver and was one of the most important
religious sites in the Inca Empire. The Spanish conquistadors destroyed the Coricancha in the 16th century and built
the Cathedral of Cusco on its site.
The Plaza de Armas is a popular place for festivals and celebrations. The annual Corpus Christi festival is held in the
square and features a parade, dancing, and music. The Plaza de Armas is also the site of many political protests and
demonstrations.
