Differentiating Language Used in Academic
Texts from Various Disciplines

Background Information for Learners


Academic writing is clear, concise, focused, structured, and backed up by
evidence. Its purpose is to aid the reader’s understanding. It has a formal tone
and style, but it is not complex and does not require the use of long sentences
and complicated vocabulary. Each subject discipline has certain writing
conventions, vocabulary, and types of discourse. However, there are some
general characteristics of academic writing that are relevant across all disciplines.

As a student, you will be asked to write different kinds of academic texts


by your teachers. It is important that you know the basic text types or genres in
various disciplines. In writing, genre refers to any category of written text that has
a particular set of rules or conventions. Some examples of writing genres are
critical reports, essays, case studies, book or film reviews, reflective diaries, and
research proposals. The following are the three general disciplines that involves
academic writing: Sciences, Humanities, Business.

Sciences are generally divided into four main branches: natural, social,
formal, and applied sciences. The following table shows some specific disciplines
that fall under each main branch:

Academic writing in the sciences is mainly done to inform the readers or to


persuade them (by supporting a claim). For whatever reason, the information you
will present must be based on verifiable data gathered through research or
experimentation. Writing in the sciences requires precision in the use of
terminology, simple and direct language, objectivity, and clarity. All
information must be well supported by evidence and reliable sources.

Activity: OBJECTIVITY

Directions: Another aspect of writing objectively is to avoid emotive language. Read the
passage below from a student's essay on media and the representation of women's
sport. Underline the three emotive language used in the text.

...Mikosa found similar results in her study for Women sport Australia, where she found
that journalists discussed the female athletes' "elegance" or referred to women as
"blonde girl(s)" and a journalist even wrote about one athlete's "domestic routine of
cooking" (1998). With this in mind, I was absolutely appalled to hear an Australian
television commentator’s reference to the women's Dutch hockey team when they won
a bronze medal on the 29/9/2000. When the team stood on the dais to receive their
medal, the male commentator’s sole comment was "Ahh look at the pretty little Dutch
girls", without any mention whatsoever of their athleticism or sporting ability. It was a sad
moment for Australian commentating and strengthens the arguments of Philips and
Mikoza regarding the language the media uses to portray sports women and women's
sport alike.

Background Information for Learners


Text Structure
The term “text structure” refers to how information is organized in a passage. The
structure of a text can change many times in a work and even within a paragraph.
Commonly used patterns of organization:
➢ Cause and Effect: the results of something are explained.
➢ Chronological: information in the passage is organized in order of time.
➢ Compare and Contrast: two or more things are described. Their
similarities and differences are discussed.
➢ Order of Importance: information is expressed as a hierarchy or in priority.
➢ Problem and Solution: a problem is described and a response or solution
is proposed or explained.
➢ Sequence / Process Writing: information is organized in steps or a
process is explained in the order in which it occurs.
➢ Spatial / Descriptive Writing: information is organized in order of space

1. Ice-cream is a delicious frozen treat that comes in a many different colors and flavors.
Two of my favorite flavors are strawberry and chocolate. Though both of these flavors
are delicious, strawberry may contain pieces of fruit while chocolate usually will not.
Even though more chocolate ice-cream is sold across the country annually than
strawberry, each flavor tastes great inside of a milk shake.
2. The ice-cream shop around the corner from my house has the best ice-cream in the
city. When you first walk inside, there is a long chrome counter with matching stools
extending to alongside the far wall. Right where the counter stops, the booth seating
begins. There are lots of old-timey knickknacks on the walls and chrome napkin holders
on all the tables. My favorite part of the shop is behind the counter glass, where they
keep all of the ice-cream flavors. A rainbow of delicious sugary flavors is kept cool and
delicious behind the counter glass.

3. Freezer burn may have wasted more ice-cream than sidewalks. If you don’t know,
freezer burn is when ice crystals form on the surface of ice-cream. These ice crystals
can ruin the texture and flavor of the ice cream. But you can prevent freezer burn. Since
freezer burn is caused when melted ice-cream is refrozen, rather than eating your ice-
cream from the container as it melts, scoop your ice-cream into a bowl and put the
container back in the fridge immediately. Doing this ought to help you solve your issues
with freezer burn.
4. No one knows the true origin of ice-cream, but the first published ice-cream recipe
appears in “Mrs. Mary Eales's Receipts,” a cookbook that was printed in London in 1718.
Sometime around 1832, an African American confectioner named Augustus Jackson
created multiple ice cream recipes and invented a superior technique to manufacture ice
cream. Ice cream soda was invented around 1874, but the real breakthrough may have
been at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, Missouri, when the American ice-cream cone
was unveiled!
5. Making ice-cream is not easy. Cream and sugar have to first be mixed in a frozen
container. Ingredients may be added at this point, if desired. The mixture must be stirred
and whipped until the cream and sugar mixture is frozen. Depending on the equipment,
this may take as long as an hour. After the ice-cream is prepared, it must be kept frozen
until it is ready to be enjoyed. Making ice-cream is difficult, but most people would agree
that it is worth the trouble.
6. Have you ever had an ice-cream headache? That’s when a painful sensation
resonates in your head after eating something cold (usually ice-cream) on a hot day.
This pain is produced by the dilation of a nerve center in the roof of your mouth. The
nerve center is overreacting to the cold by trying to heat your brain. Ice-cream
headaches have turned many smiles to frowns.
7. One time my mom and I made ice-cream. We added sugar and cream into a big
glass bowl. We kept it frozen in the middle of a bigger glass bowl. While it froze, I stirred
the mixture with a hand mixer. It was the first time that had I used one and it splattered
ice-cream mixture all over the kitchen. The rest of the mixture finally froze, so we ate
some ice cream, and then put the remaining portions in the freezer so that it wouldn’t get
freezer burned. That was a good day.
8. It was the most beautiful banana split that I had ever seen. In the middle of the bowl,
there were three scoops of ice-cream: chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla. On top of the
ice-cream were a banana and a thick web of chocolate and caramel sauces. A huge
puff of whipped cream covered the sauces and a handful of crushed nuts dappled the
whipped cream. On top of it all was a cherry, but I’ve never liked the soggy squish of
cherries.
9. When it comes to making ice-cream, you can do it the traditional way, by stirring it in
a frozen container, or you can use liquid nitrogen to freeze your mixture. There are some
advantages to using liquid nitrogen. Since liquid nitrogen freezes the mixture faster, the

Passage #1 – Chemical and Physical Changes


All matter, all things can be changed in two ways: chemically and physically. Both
chemical and physical changes affect the state of matter. Physical changes are those
that do not change the make-up or identity of the matter. For example, clay will bend or
flatten if squeezed, but it will still be clay. Changing the shape of clay is a physical
change, and does not change the matter’s identity. Chemical changes turn the matter
into a new kind of matter with different properties. For example, when paper is burnt, it
becomes ash and will never be paper again. The difference between them is that
physical changes are temporary or only last for a little while, and chemical changes are
permanent, which means they last forever. Physical and chemical changes both affect
the state of matter.
Passage #2 – The Best PB & J Ever
When I got home from school after a long boring day, I took out the peanut butter, jelly,
and bread. After taking the lid off of the jars, I spread the peanut butter on one side of
the bread and the jelly on the other, and then I put the two pieces of bread together.
After that, I enjoyed it while watching “Cops” on the TV. I swear, that was the best peanut
butter and jelly sandwich I ever ate.

Passage #3 – Bobby Fischer
Robert James Fischer was born in Chicago but unlocked the secrets of chess in a
Brooklyn apartment right above a candy store. At the age of six he taught himself to play
by following the instruction booklet that came with his chess board. After spending much
of his childhood in chess clubs, Fischer said that, “One day, I just got good.” That may
be a bit of an understatement. At the age of 13 he won the U.S. Junior Chess
Championship, becoming the youngest Junior Champion ever. At the age of 14 he won
the U.S. Championship and became the youngest U.S. Champion in history. Fischer
would go on to become the World Champion of chess, but he would also grow to become
his own worst enemy. Instead of defending the title, he forfeited it to the next challenger
without even making a move, and the rise of a chess superstar ended with a fizzle.
Passage #4 – Save the Tigers
Dr. Miller doesn’t want the tigers to vanish. These majestic beasts are disappearing at
an alarming rate. Dr. Miller thinks that we should write to our congress people. If we let
them know that we demand the preservation of this species, maybe we can make a
difference. Dr. Miller also thinks that we should donate to Save the Tigers. Our
donations will help to support and empower those who are fighting the hardest to
preserve the tigers. We owe it to our grandchildren to do something.
Passage #5 – The Great Recession
Many people are confused about why our economy went to shambles in 2008. The crisis
was actually the result of a combination of many complex factors. First, easy credit
conditions allowed people who were high-risk or unworthy of credit to borrow, and even
people who had no income were eligible for large loans. Second, banks would bundle
these toxic loans and sell them as packages on the financial market. Third, large
insurance firms backed these packages, misrepresenting these high-risk loans as safe
investments. Fourth, because of the ease of acquiring credit and the rapid growth in the
housing market, people were buying two or three houses, intending to sell them for more
than they paid. All of these factors created bubbles of speculation. These bubbles burst,
sending the whole market into a downward spiral, causing employers to lose capital and
lay off employees. Consumer spending then plummeted and most businesses suffered.
The economy is like a big boat, and once it gets moving quickly in the wrong direction,
it’s hard to turn it around.
Passage #6 – Screen Protector
Before applying the screen protector, clean the surface of your phone’s screen with a
soft cloth. Once the surface of your screen is clean, remove the paper backing on the
screen protector. Evenly apply the sticky side of the screen protector to your phone’s
screen. Smooth out any air bubble trapped on between the protector and the phone

PASSAGES
1. You may think it’s bad to forget your homework, but what if you forgot who you were?
Amnesia is a condition where a person loses some of their memories, like details about
their personal identity, but still may remember how to do things, like play a piano. One
type of Amnesia is called post-traumatic amnesia. Post-traumatic amnesia is usually
due to a head injury (like a serious fall or knock on the head). The degree of memory
loss may be related to the force of the injury. A simple whiplash may cause a person to
forget the moments before the accident, but a more severe injury may cause a greater
loss. For example, the victim may not remember who certain people are or may forget
details about their own identities.
2. Ansel Bourne was a preacher, carpenter, and most likely an inspiration for the name
“Bourne” in the movie and novel series, “The Bourne Identity.” Up until 1857, Bourne
had been a carpenter, until he was called to religion. After 1858, he worked as a
evangelical preacher, until 1887. He set up shop in Norristown, Pennsylvania, as a
candy maker using the name A.J. Brown. Three months later, he woke up not knowing
where he was, with no memory of the previous months. The case of Mr. Bourne has
fascinated psychologists, and some film makers, for years.
3. The term “amnesia” refers to complete or partial memory loss. Almost all of us will
experience some form of amnesia in our lives, even if it’s just a simple case of verbal
amnesia, like forgetting someone’s name. Fortunately, there are things that you can do
to prevent amnesia. Here is a list of foods that you can eat to improve your memory:
almonds, walnuts, bananas, honey, apples, and black pepper. Though these foods may
not reverse post-traumatic amnesia, they should improve your memory in daily life if you
eat them regularly enough.
4. What do “Finding Nemo” and “Robocop” have in common? Not much, except that
they both feature characters that suffer amnesia. Amnesia is a common plot device in
movies and TV shows, but how accurate are these depictions? In television and movies,
memory loss caused by a knock to the head (post-traumatic amnesia) is shown as fairly
common, when it is actually quite rare. Unlike in movies and television shows that
feature amnesia, most knocks to the head will not produce memory loss. In reality,
memory loss or amnesia is much more likely to occur as the result of a stroke, brain
infection, or brain surgery. So while amnesia causes people or characters to lose
memories in both film and reality, characters are usually “fixed” by taking another knock
to the head. In reality, people are not cured so simply.
5. What would you do if you awoke one day and discovered that you could not create
new memories? You might remember everything that occurred in your life up to the point
of an injury, but could not form new memories beyond that. This condition is called
“anterograde amnesia,” and it is difficult to treat, but doctors and therapists recommend
these steps: first, use technology to help. A cell phone with a calendar reminder can do
much to offset this condition. Second, use helpers. Having people to assist with daily
tasks, like paying bills, will prove quite helpful. Lastly, seek therapy. While there is no
cure for anterograde amnesia, memory training may help the afflicted live a more normal

life. Currently, there are no chemical medications or drugs that will alleviate this
condition.
6. The brain is the most complicated system in the human body. The brain is separated
into two hemispheres or halves. From front to back, the brain is further divided into three
parts: the forebrain, the midbrain, and the hindbrain. The forebrain is where most
reasoning, thinking, and emotional activity occur. It is also where most memories are
stored. The midbrain controls reflexes and processes sensory information (sight, touch,
taste, etc.) The hindbrain processes basic survival functions, like breathing and
maintaining a heartbeat. The brain is truly the most amazing system in the human body.
7. Being a clown isn’t all fun and games. Rodeo clowns expose themselves to great
danger every time they perform. When cowboys dismount or are bucked off of bulls at
riding competitions, rodeo clowns jump in front of the bulls and motion wildly to get their
attention. In this way rodeo clowns provide an alternate target, and in doing so protect
the rider. So you see, sometimes clowning around can be serious business.
8. The wolverine, a medium sized mammal weighing no more than 50 lbs., has earned
its reputation for ferocity with its documented ability to kill prey many times its size. The
reason why wolverines have so many conflicts with other animals (including wolves,
cougars, and even bears) is probably because of the wolverine’s preferred hunting style.
Rather than chasing down or tricking its prey like most hunters, the wolverine prefers to
take its meals directly from other hunters. So while a polar bear or a lone wolf might be
enjoying a hard earned carcass, a hungry wolverine may try to take his lunch. This keeps
the wolverine in plenty of fights.
9. Sometime in December of 1891, Dr. James Naismith, a gym teacher at the YMCA
College in Springfield, Massachusetts was trying to keep his gym class active on a rainy
day. He wanted a vigorous game that would keep his students moving. After rejecting
a few other ideas because they were too rough or not suited for the walled-in gym,
Naismith wrote out the rules for a game with peach baskets fixed to ten-foot elevated
tracks. Naismith’s students played against one another, passing the ball around and
shooting it into the peach baskets. Dribbling wasn’t a part of the original game, and it
took a while to realize that the game would run more smoothly if the bottoms of the
baskets were removed, but this game grew to be one of the most popular sports in
America today. Can you guess which one?
10. What’s that humming sound? Could it be hummingbird, the only bird capable of
backward flight? Hummingbirds have many unique flight habits that distinguish them
from other birds. Most birds flap their wings up and down to fly, but the hummingbird
moves its wings forward and backward very rapidly in a figure eight pattern. This allows
the hummingbird to hover in position, fly upside down, and move about very rapidly. And
while other birds have to push off with their feet to begin flying, and work their ways up
to their top speeds, the hummingbird can both start flying at maximum speed and stop
flying instantaneously. After you’ve seen a hummingbird in flight, it’s unlikely that you’ll
mistake them for another bird.

11. Remember, if something is worth doing, it is worth doing correctly. That said, the
key to making perfect cookies is merely a matter of preparation and precision. To begin
with, read your cookie recipe thoroughly before baking. Make sure that you have all of
the necessary ingredients before you continue. Next, use good tools and utensils.
Sometimes, the craftsperson is only as good as his or her tools. By using good tools
you can minimize mistakes and improve the quality of your product. Lastly, you should
use top quality ingredients. Unlike in the fairytales, you can’t turn lead into gold. If you
use poor quality materials, you’ll create an inferior product. So, to make perfect cookies
you should use the highest quality materials available. Bon apatite!
12. The term “machine gun” is commonly applied to any gun that is designed to fire
repeatedly and in rapid succession for as long as the trigger is held down. During the
course of warfare, the trigger of some machine guns may be held down almost
continuously for hours to create suppressant fire (rounds fired not necessarily to kill an
enemy, but to prevent them from attacking). All of this firing can generate a lot of heat,
which may cause the weapon to overheat and malfunction. But this situation has been
addressed in a number of ways. For one, practically all machine guns fire from an open
bolt, which allows air to cool the breach between bursts of fire. Additionally, some
machine guns have removable barrels, which allow hot barrels to be replaced. And some
advanced machine guns even have sophisticated barrel cooling systems, which maintain
a functional heat level within the weapon. As you might have concluded, a lot of brain
power has gone into keeping those guns firing.

Background Information for Learners


SUMMARIZING
A summary is a short overview of an entire discussion or argument.
You might summarize a whole research paper or conversation in a single
paragraph, for example, or with a series of bullet points, using your own
words and style.
People often summarize when the original material is long, or to
emphasize key facts or points. Summaries leave out details or examples
that may distract the reader from the most important information, and they
simplify complex arguments, grammar and vocabulary.
To summarize text or speech:
1.Get a general idea of the original. The first sentence or two of your
summary should contain the author’s thesis, or central concept, stated in
your own words.
2. Check your understanding. When summarizing a longer article, try
to see how the various stages in the explanation or argument are built up in
groups of related paragraphs
3. Make notes. Omit ideas that are not really central to the text.
4. Write your summary. Avoid writing opinions or personal responses
in your summaries
5. Check your work. Be careful not to plagiarize the author’s words. If
you do use even a few of the author’s words, they must appear in quotation
marks. To avoid plagiarism, try writing the first draft of your summary without
looking back at the original text.
6. Seek permission for any copyrighted material that you use, and
cite it appropriately.

The idea that women are not equal to men has been a prevailing, common
theme in literature since the beginning of time. Like their predecessors,
Renaissance writers staunchly laid down the tenet that women were less
valuable throughout the pages of effusive literary writings, where women are
alternately idolized as virtuous or shunned as harlots. One man proved to be
a glaring contradiction to this falsity. That man was William Shakespeare and
he had the courage in those turbulent days to recognize the value and equality
of women. His portrayal of women differed than that of many of his
contemporaries during the Renaissance era.

The digital divide is an issue that sheds light on a pervasive social situation
in the U.S.: some people in the U.S. have access to the Internet and its
extensive array of information, but other people do not. The difference
between the people who can sign on and those who can’t is a difference that
has always divided the nation: race or ethnicity. In today’s society, the Internet
is power because of the vast amount of information it provides, opportunities
it creates, and its linkage to future societal norms. Therefore, the digital divide
is not an easily solved economic issue as it may seem at first, but rather a
social issue, and one that is merely a glimpse into the bigger picture of social
inequality.

Stating the Thesis Statement of an Academic Text

Background Information for Learners


The thesis statement is a sentence that expresses the main idea of a research
paper or essay. A thesis statement tells the reader what the paper is about and helps
guide the writer and keep his arguments or ideas focused. It is a fact that the writer
wants to prove or explain.

The topic sentence is different from the thesis statement. The thesis statement
tells what the entire paper is about. It is used to define the purpose of the paper, to
argue or to state a point. The topic sentence, however, shows only what the paragraph
is about. It is sometimes called the focus sentence in the paragraph.

In academic writing, the thesis is often explicit; it is a sentence that forms part
of the paper and it is directly stated in the text. It may be found in the beginning of the
work, but not always–some types of academic writing leave the thesis until the
conclusion.

Academic writing sometimes relies on implicit thesis statements, as well.


Implicit denotes something that is suggested or implied. Unlike explicit thesis
statements, the primary point of the paper is not directly stated in the text. It is not a
one-sentence thesis statement. Instead, writers use facts, storylines or narratives,
figures or statistics, etc. to support their opinions, judgments and prove their stand.

1. Read the whole work.

totally surrendering to God. Standing on the ground that God is a merciful God and
He hears and understands the miseries of His people, He would grant His blessings
to help man and woman be lifted out from the miserable situation, as He brought
out the Jews from Egyptian slavery. Thus, the Ybanags have the reason to patiently
wait for the blessings of God.
Their faith in God which has reached great depth since the inception of
Catholicism in the country is a virtual manifestation of their total dependence and
reliance on the Creator.

NSCB director-general Romulo Virola said Region I (Ilocos Region) does not

Virola noted people in the Cordillera Administrative Region, Region II

The four literary types such as proverbs, riddles, poems and songs reflect the social
life of the Itawes. These literary types are very instrumental in the formation of the
moral and social values, sense of humility, industry, family customs and traditions,

The Itawes recognizes brotherhood, faith understanding, and perseverance,
treasure their unique practices, characteristics and the right attitudes in dealing with
other people through his literature.
Based on different literary types, the Itawes is not distinct from the rest of his

a God-given gift; strongly believe in the power of prayer and God-fearing. As a
neighbor, he is truthful, unselfish, compassionate, kind and considerate. As a son
or daughter, he is obedient, respectful, disciplined and loyal.

2. Keeping hands clean is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid
getting sick and spreading germs to others. Many diseases and conditions are spread
by not washing hands with soap and clean, running water.
Feces (poop) from people or animals is an important source of germs
like Salmonella, E. coli O157, and norovirus that cause diarrhea, and it can spread
some respiratory infections like adenovirus and hand-foot-mouth disease. These
kinds of germs can get onto hands after people use the toilet or change a diaper, but
also in less obvious ways, like after handling raw meats that have invisible amounts
of animal poop on them.

3. Despite its hard hit on physical businesses, online shopping has proved to have
many positive advantages for consumers. Online stores are open 24 hours a day, 7

get to cut back on gas spending by staying indoors. Due to the lack of operating costs,

of our technology today, cyber-bullying has become one of the most difficult issues
to resolve in our society. Since cyber-bullying issues are more likely to happen at
schools, social networking, and mobile phones; teachers, principals, and parents are
responsible for monitoring, preventing, and punish cyber-bullying. The expectations
of most parents in the school is protection. Meanwhile, many staffs feel unprepared
and unwilling to be prosecutors and judges because they do not want to be sued for
something done which might seem right to them but not to others, especially to
parents who are responsible for the child's wellbeing.

our time and the greatest challenge we have faced since World War Two. Since
its emergence in Asia late last year, the virus has spread to every continent except
Antarctica. Cases are rising daily in Africa the Americas, and Europe.

Countries are racing to slow the spread of the virus by testing and treating
patients, carrying out contact tracing, limiting travel, quarantining citizens, and
cancelling large gatherings such as sporting events, concerts, and schools.

The pandemic is moving like a wave—one that may yet crash on those least
