Not people are cognizant that food drug interaction is an

interaction resulting from a physical or chemical relationship between

s drug and a nutrient, multiple nutrients, food in general, or nutritional
status. Hence, we, Huda and Sarah, intended to educate people
about the effects of food on medication through our table, which took
its place in the House of Yemeni Music and Art on the 24th of
December 2020. We talked in general about the ability of some drugs
to reduce and absorb vitamins in the human body, avoid taking
certain medicines with some herbs such as garlic, fenugreek, and
ginger, and we distributed medicine packets containing general
advice and instructions about food drug interaction

People’s anteraction during the explaintion program

The table and its contents of medicines and Yemeni House of Music and Art, where the
instructions program was held
.What we did was collective and divided between us
as follows :

 Huda:
I’ve talked about Oral Hypoglycemic such as “Biguanides” (Metformin) which
has the ability to reduce Vit B 12, Calcium, and Vit D. Besides, I highly recommend
that patients taking Metformin reduce the amount of ginger, fenugreek, and garlic
since those herbs are widely known and used by the Yemeni people. Moreover, I’ve
mentioned Acid Suppressing Drug (Proton Pump Inhibitors), as a treatment for
acidity, can diminish Vit B12, Vit C, Magnesium, and Zink. Furthermore, I explained
that garlic is a herb that has anticoagulant (blood thinner) benefits. Warfarin too is a
medication that is used as an anticoagulant. When both are taken together, they have
additive effects which may result in prolonged bleeding. Finally, I advised that
patients compensate through food sources by distributing papers containing
instructions.
 Sarah:
• I've talked about Antihypertensive drugs (Captopril) that reduce some nutrients
like Calcium, magnesium, Vitamin B1, and Potassium. Also, I’ve mentioned Oral
Contraceptive ( Yamin), as a common medicine taken by Yemeni women, which
diminishes Vitamins B6, B12, C, E, and Folate and minerals like Calcium and
Magnesium. In addition, I’ve talked about the relationship between Warfarin and
Vitamin K by stating that when warfarin is combined with leafy green vegetables
(containing Vit K), the green vegetables counteract the drug’s anticoagulant effect and
place patients at increased risk of thrombosis. Finally, I advised that patients
compensate through food sources by distributing papers containing instructions.
