BDAT Overview and Instructions for Administration

Introduction
The Belize Diagnostic Achievement Test (BDAT) - developed to address the interruptions in
the 2020 school year caused by Covid-19 - is an assessment tool that seeks to measure the
performance of returning students at all levels. (Initial BDATs did not include all levels). The
results of the activity and the analysis offered for the two tests – Language Arts and
Mathematics – will offer meaningful data that can be used to develop targeted interventions
by teachers and school leaders to help students get back on track after the lengthy absence
from school.

Diagnostic Testing Diagnostic tests are a

The BDAT Suite, like other diagnostic tests, is designed to form of pre-assessment
where teachers can
identify students’ strengths and weaknesses in relation to the evaluate students'
material that will be covered in the upcoming school year. It is strengths, weaknesses,
knowledge and skills
to help teachers adjust the curriculum to student needs, inform
before their
practices of differentiated instruction, and to help determine instruction.
required resources.

The BDAT is not a test that will tell schools HOW to fix student weaknesses; that is left up to
the expertise of the teacher and school administrators. In addition, it is not formative or
summative assessment, which take place during instruction and after instruction, respectively.
In addition, diagnostic tests are not done for a grade- there is no pass or fail. Lastly, the BDAT
is not a needs analysis, which aims to find out what students want to know or are interested
in.

Components of the BDAT

The BDAT Suite is comprised of tests in Language Arts and Mathematics at each class level:
BDAT Inf1, BDAT Inf2, BDAT 1, BDAT 2, BDAT 3, BDAT 4, BDAT 5, and BDAT 6. Each paper
requires students to do the following:

Paper 1: Multiple Choice –choose the correct answer from three or four given options

Paper 2: Short Response –fill in the blanks, match, circle, identify whether true or false, draw,
or give their answer in a phrase or sentence.

Paper 3: Extended Response (Language Arts)/ Problem Solving (Mathematics) – provide

evidence of their knowledge and understanding of specific content through poetry, letter,
report or story writing, and through application of mathematical concepts.

(Note: BDAT Inf 1 and BDAT Inf 2 do not have Paper 3 tests, only Papers 1 and 2).

BDAT Administration

Since the test is diagnostic, the class teacher can do the administration; however, where
possible, invigilators can be teachers from other class levels. All parts of the examination need
not be administered on the same day. It is recommended that the tests be administered
over a period of two to three days.

Below is a suggested timetable for administering the BDAT:

TWO-DAY ACTIVITY SCHEDULE (Infant 1 and Infant 2)

Some tests are designed to be administered to small groups, while other BDATs can be
administered to an entire class. Each student is different, and some make take longer than
others to complete the test.

Recommended Activity Duration

Diagnostic tests are to be administered under usual testing conditions – no communication
among students, no assistance from the teacher/ invigilator, quiet environment – with one
exception. Each test has a recommended duration in which it should be administered; this
means that additional time should be given because students may not have completed the
test. Depending on the factors – the student, the environment, the activity - five to fifteen

the test.

Below are tables with the recommended duration for each test. Administrators may use

Role of the Invigilator

Invigilators are responsible for the smooth, safe and secure administration of the
examination, as detailed by the guidelines:

• accounting for and returning of all examination materials issued

• recording attendance
• maintaining utmost alertness throughout the period of the examination
BDAT Administration & Guidelines 3|Page
BDAT Overview and Instructions for Administration
• communicating clearly to the students all relevant instructions as required, including
providing corrections or new instructions in accordance with ERRATA issued by the
Examinations Unit
• giving assistance to students, where needed, in filling in the required information on the
cover of the Test Booklets (and Answer Sheets, if used)
• providing, where possible, #2 HB pencils, sharpeners, erasers and pens to students who
do not have the necessary equipment for the assessment
N.B. Invigilators are not to assist students in interpreting items on the activity by giving students
any information on the subject matter. Students must interpret test questions for
themselves.

Recording Test Answers

Multiple Choice
For each multiple-choice item on the test there are three or four suggested answers - A, B, C,
(or D) given. (BDAT Inf 1 and BDAT Inf 2 have only three (3) options.) Only one is correct.
When the correct answer is chosen, students should shade or write the letter that corresponds
to the answer on the answer sheet or on their paper.

For example:
1. The opposite of good is:
A. worse B. better C. bad D. best

The correct answer is bad. So, on the answer sheet or on their own paper, students should
shade or write the letter “C” that corresponds with the answer next to the number that
corresponds with the item.

If a mistake is made, students should erase the mistake cleanly with a pencil eraser and then
shade or write the answer they chose.

Short Response
Each question has specific instructions on how to give a correct answer. Students may be
asked to circle, underline, draw, match, fill in the blanks, or to give their answer using a
number, word, or phrase. Students can write directly on the test booklet, but where alternate
materials (folder sheet, blanks/ notebooks, typing sheets) are used, the invigilator should
indicate where/ how the correct answer should be submitted.

For example: The question on the right requires

students to rewrite the mathematical statement.
Students should write their response in the space
provided.

BDAT Administration & Guidelines 4|Page

BDAT Overview and Instructions for Administration

Extended Response/ Problem Solving

Each question has specific instructions on how to give a correct answer. As hinted at in the
title of the paper, students will be expected to provide a more comprehensive indication of
their understanding of the content through writing or problem solving.

For example:

Like the Short Response paper, students can write directly on the test booklet; however, if
these are not used, then the invigilator should indicate where/ how the answer should be
submitted.

Before The Test

Teachers who are invigilating the tests are expected to familiarize themselves thoroughly
with the materials, instructions, and other guidance regarding the tests. Guidelines are
provided in this manual for tests that require reading aloud to students.

On The Day of the Test

Teachers who are invigilating the test should:

• conduct equipment check to ensure that all students have the necessary equipment to
do the test- #2 HB pencils, erasers, sharpeners, and pens;
• remind students that absolutely no communication is allowed once the activity begins,
so there will be no borrowing of equipment;
• conduct checks to ensure that students do not have any items that may be used to find
out the correct answer;
• distribute test material to all students;
• ensure that the Name, School Name and Class are written in the spaces provided.
(Invigilators are expected to give assistance, where needed, in filling out the students’
information since the accurate information is essential for data collection and reporting);
and
• read the instructions pertinent to the test(s) once the distribution of the activity
material and the filling in of student information are completed.

BDAT Administration & Guidelines 5|Page

BDAT Overview and Instructions for Administration

During the test

• read the instructions to the student so that he/she is aware of the test that is to follow;
• where alternate materials (notebook, typing sheets, folder sheets, etc.) are used to
record answers, give appropriate instructions on how to proceed;
• give students updates on time at appropriate intervals (at least after 15 minutes have
passed, and at least when there are fifteen, ten or five minutes remaining);
• instruct students to review their answers/ responses, then collect his/ her paper(s) and
have them sit quietly until everyone is finished; and
• use their discretion to extend the time by 5-15 minutes. (If the student still has not
completed the test after the extension, the papers are to be collected and a note recorded.

General Guidelines to Invigilators:

ALL LEVELS
The following is to be read to the students before the administration of tests begins.

We are going to do a number of activities in Language Arts and Mathematics. These activities
will help us to know more about what needs to be done to help with your learning.

I will let you when to begin, how much time remains, and when to stop. If you are finished
before the time is up, spend the remaining time checking your work. If you need more time to
complete the activity, please raise your hand.

There should be no talking once the activity begins, so there will be no borrowing of equipment.
Just relax, try to answer all the questions, and do your best! Make sure to write clearly.

(NOTE TO INVIGILATOR: If you observe students who are struggling to complete the
items, or who appear to need more time to complete the activity, you may extend the
time by a few more minutes [5-15 minutes]. Remember, the goal is to have students
attempt all items so extra time may be necessary for this to happen.)

The specific instructions for each paper are given in each of the following sections.

General Guidelines: All Levels 6 | P a g e

BDAT Overview and Instructions for Administration

Guidelines for Lower Division

Inf1 &Inf2

BDATs administered at the Lower Division are dependent on the teacher’s assistance in
reading/ calling out what is on the test; all or some portions of the activity require the
teacher to read aloud passages and items / instructions to the students. The teacher
administering this assessment should review the activity to become familiar with the format,
content and notes for effective reading.

It is important that tests at this level be administered by the designated class teacher for the
student(s).

If the class teacher is not able to, then any other teacher may substitute, providing that
he/she has been given the required de-briefing and orientation to ensure competency to
properly administer the test and a full appreciation of its importance.

Tests at this level are to be administered preferably one-on-one, but for practical purposes
can be done with small groups of three to four students at a time. Exception must be made
in the case of special needs students, who will require one-on-one assistance.

Instructions for the teacher are provided. They are self-explanatory and tell
the teacher what to read and what to say if additional advice or explanation
is required to provide to the students.

Guidelines for reading to students (Language Arts)

The Invigilator must:
• project voice so that students hear clearly;
• read text exactly as written using a natural tone;
• pronounce words accurately so that students can correctly make meaning of the words
heard;
• minimize the use of voice inflection, word emphasis, or other reading styles, as this can
lead students toward a response or make the activity content confusing;
• read the activity question followed by the multiple-choice answer options;
• stop reading aloud if the text is misread - the Invigilator should stop and say, “No, that
is wrong. I must read it to you again.” – then re-read the text;
• adapt the pace of reading to ensure that students can follow along;
• sweep a finger under the answer choices with pictures (so that students are aware of
the options); and
• NOT explain, translate, or verbally interpret any portion of the activity items or answer
options. No assistance (e.g., describing any pictures that accompany the passages,
defining words, substituting words, attempting to clarify the intent of activity items,
etc.) may be provided to students.

General Guidelines: Lower Division 7 | P a g e

Listening Comprehension Reading Examples

The following examples are practice items intended to assist invigilators in reading various
reading test items. Some items have explanations as to why they are read a particular way
and notes of issues that could arise when reading a specific type of item. All test items are to
be read exactly as written using a natural tone and manner. If a mistake is made in reading a
test item, the Invigilator should stop and say, “No, that is wrong. I must read it to you again.”
Then re-read the test item.

Guidelines for reading to students (Mathematics)

When reading aloud Mathematics items, the invigilator
• should be familiar with all symbols that might be included in a specific type of test
question.
• should understand what the test item is questioning to avoid cueing the student by
reading the numbers in a specific way.
• must refer the student to the same figure or drawing immediately after reading the
section of the test item that directs the student when the item is based on a figure or
drawing.
• must ensure that reading information aloud does not clue the student to a response.

Reading Aloud Mathematical Items Examples

• Whole numbers should be read according to their common English usage as long as
place value is not part of the activity question. For example, the number 1,234 would
be read as “one thousand two hundred thirty-four” if the activity item was not
assessing place value. The number 1,234 would be read as “one comma two three
four” if the activity item is assessing place value (i.e., “What is the value of the 2 in the
number 1,234?”).
