BDAT Overview and Instructions for Administration
Introduction
The Belize Diagnostic Achievement Test (BDAT) - developed to address the interruptions in
the 2020 school year caused by Covid-19 - is an assessment tool that seeks to measure the
performance of returning students at all levels. (Initial BDATs did not include all levels). The
results of the activity and the analysis offered for the two tests – Language Arts and
Mathematics – will offer meaningful data that can be used to develop targeted interventions
by teachers and school leaders to help students get back on track after the lengthy absence
from school.
The BDAT is not a test that will tell schools HOW to fix student weaknesses; that is left up to
the expertise of the teacher and school administrators. In addition, it is not formative or
summative assessment, which take place during instruction and after instruction, respectively.
In addition, diagnostic tests are not done for a grade- there is no pass or fail. Lastly, the BDAT
is not a needs analysis, which aims to find out what students want to know or are interested
in.
Paper 1: Multiple Choice –choose the correct answer from three or four given options
Paper 2: Short Response –fill in the blanks, match, circle, identify whether true or false, draw,
or give their answer in a phrase or sentence.
(Note: BDAT Inf 1 and BDAT Inf 2 do not have Paper 3 tests, only Papers 1 and 2).

BDAT Overview and Instructions for Administration
BDAT Administration
Since the test is diagnostic, the class teacher can do the administration; however, where
possible, invigilators can be teachers from other class levels. All parts of the examination need
not be administered on the same day. It is recommended that the tests be administered
over a period of two to three days.
*Note: The time in brackets reflects the time if additional minutes are added.
Some tests are designed to be administered to small groups, while other BDATs can be
administered to an entire class. Each student is different, and some make take longer than
others to complete the test.
Below are tables with the recommended duration for each test. Administrators may use
their discretion in determining the allocation of extra minutes where necessary.

For example:
1. The opposite of good is:
A. worse B. better C. bad D. best
The correct answer is bad. So, on the answer sheet or on their own paper, students should
shade or write the letter “C” that corresponds with the answer next to the number that
corresponds with the item.
If a mistake is made, students should erase the mistake cleanly with a pencil eraser and then
shade or write the answer they chose.
Short Response
Each question has specific instructions on how to give a correct answer. Students may be
asked to circle, underline, draw, match, fill in the blanks, or to give their answer using a
number, word, or phrase. Students can write directly on the test booklet, but where alternate
materials (folder sheet, blanks/ notebooks, typing sheets) are used, the invigilator should
indicate where/ how the correct answer should be submitted.
For example:
Like the Short Response paper, students can write directly on the test booklet; however, if
these are not used, then the invigilator should indicate where/ how the answer should be
submitted.
• conduct equipment check to ensure that all students have the necessary equipment to
do the test- #2 HB pencils, erasers, sharpeners, and pens;
• remind students that absolutely no communication is allowed once the activity begins,
so there will be no borrowing of equipment;
• conduct checks to ensure that students do not have any items that may be used to find
out the correct answer;
• distribute test material to all students;
• ensure that the Name, School Name and Class are written in the spaces provided.
(Invigilators are expected to give assistance, where needed, in filling out the students’
information since the accurate information is essential for data collection and reporting);
and
• read the instructions pertinent to the test(s) once the distribution of the activity
material and the filling in of student information are completed.
We are going to do a number of activities in Language Arts and Mathematics. These activities
will help us to know more about what needs to be done to help with your learning.
I will let you when to begin, how much time remains, and when to stop. If you are finished
before the time is up, spend the remaining time checking your work. If you need more time to
complete the activity, please raise your hand.
There should be no talking once the activity begins, so there will be no borrowing of equipment.
Just relax, try to answer all the questions, and do your best! Make sure to write clearly.
(NOTE TO INVIGILATOR: If you observe students who are struggling to complete the
items, or who appear to need more time to complete the activity, you may extend the
time by a few more minutes [5-15 minutes]. Remember, the goal is to have students
attempt all items so extra time may be necessary for this to happen.)
The specific instructions for each paper are given in each of the following sections.
BDATs administered at the Lower Division are dependent on the teacher’s assistance in
reading/ calling out what is on the test; all or some portions of the activity require the
teacher to read aloud passages and items / instructions to the students. The teacher
administering this assessment should review the activity to become familiar with the format,
content and notes for effective reading.
It is important that tests at this level be administered by the designated class teacher for the
student(s).
If the class teacher is not able to, then any other teacher may substitute, providing that
he/she has been given the required de-briefing and orientation to ensure competency to
properly administer the test and a full appreciation of its importance.
Tests at this level are to be administered preferably one-on-one, but for practical purposes
can be done with small groups of three to four students at a time. Exception must be made
in the case of special needs students, who will require one-on-one assistance.
Instructions for the teacher are provided. They are self-explanatory and tell
the teacher what to read and what to say if additional advice or explanation
is required to provide to the students.

the assessments have a recommended duration and students can be told about how
much time they have left, it may be more important for the teacher to monitor the
time and the students’ participation rather than giving them too many reminders
about time remaining. Students at this level may not be aware of the passage of
minutes and too frequent reminders may add to their anxiety.)
