1.3 Classification and species

1. Classification is putting living organisms

into groups using their similarities and
differences. It is important, so that we know
how many different types of living
organisms there are.
2. A species is a group of organisms that can
reproduce to produce fertile offspring.
3. They cannot breed so they are not a
species.
4. Scientific naming is important because scientists
around the world know exactly which one they are
talking about.
5. We can’t be sure how many species there are
because we haven’t found them yet. It is difficult
to decide whether similar animals belong to the
same or different species.
