HW
2. Total Magnification = eyepiece magnification x objective lens magnification
= 10 x 40 = 400x
3. Many cells are colourless. Stains are coloured dyes which make the cells
easier to see.
4. Mitochondria is an organelle inside the cell, which needs to be magnified
more to be seen.

2.4 Using a microscope

1. Eyepiece A, objective lens B; stage C, slide D, coarse focus E, fine focus F, light
source G.

2. The correct order is:

● Move the stage of the microscope to its lowest position.
● Put the object you want to look at on the Keep it in place using the clips.
● Choose the objective lens with the lower magnification and move it into
position
● Look through the eyepiece lens and turn the coarse focus knob slowly until
the object into focus.
● Once the object is in focus, turn the fine for knob slightly to see if it makes
the image even sharper.
● Draw your observations using a pencil. Record the magnification you are
using.
● To see your specimen in more detail, repeat these steps using an objective
lens with a higher magnification.

3. total magnification = 5 x 4 = x20

Extension
total magnification = eyepiece lens magnification x objective lens
magnification. x100 = x4 objective lens magnification. Rearrange to calculate
objective lens magnification = 100/4 = x25.
