Lesson 3: Summary and Essential Question – Peer-graded assignment

Language learners should be exposed only to the forms they are taught

Hi there! It’s a pleasure to meet you all. My name is Binoy, and usually go by the nick name Bee. Today, I’ll be sharing
with you what my opinion is, on the essential question, “Language learners should be exposed only to the forms they
are taught”, my opinion on that statement whether I agree or disagree with it and the reasons to justify my opinion.
First off, I thank all of you in advance for taking your time to review my assignment, and here we go!

I really don’t agree with the statement, “Language learners should be exposed only to the forms they are taught”,
because the main reason is there is no sufficient time for the students to acquire language within a maximum of five
hours a week. English is also taught as a subject like maths or history given the same amount of time. Same kids to
mingle with every day and same teaching strategies every day will hinder the students’ learning and ability towards
English. As we have discussed previously, it is not about leaning but there is more of acquiring and using language in
real world circumstances.

In consequence, students should be exposed to the world outside the classroom by opening the door of the
classroom. As teachers we should show them other ways to acquire english out of the classroom, first off by listing
the possible language resources; family, friends and neighbors. Pen-palling is a best interactive method to stay
connected and also acquire English. Creation of language goals and English Clubs are other efficient methods that
could be used to expose students to the outside world. And now with the advent of internet, students can watch
movies, watch tutorials, listen to music, play online games and also social media has aided students to acquire
English. Research shows that 67% of students have acquired English though messaging, 87%, 92% and 96% of
students have acquired English via social media, YouTube videos and online gaming respectively. Also with the
development of technology, various websites and mobile apps are available which can aid the language learning
process.

Hence, by the above justification it is clear to everyone that students should exposed to the world outside of the
classroom and shown all possible form of learning. All in all, students should be told to utilize all forms of learning
and immerse themselves in the language and also surround themselves by the chances they get to practically use it.
