Answer all the Questions

Q. No. Question Description Marks

1 Describe a jet engine. Elucidate the working difference between a turbofan, turbojet, 10
turboprop and turboshaft engine.

2 What do you understand by thrust? What is desired for a thrust:- High velocity jet of small 10
mass flow or Velocity of jet of high mass flow? Justify with valid reasons.

3 A Brayton cycle operates with a regenerator of 75% effectiveness. The air at the inlet to the 10
compressor is at 0.1 Mpa and 30 degree C, the pressure ratio is 6.0 and the maximum cycle
temperature is 900 degree C. If the compressor and the turbine have efficiencies of 80% each,
find the percentage increase in the cycle efficiency due to regeneration.

4 Derive the efficiency of a turbine. Draw suitable diagram and derive the same. 10
5 Illustrate with a neat diagram the sections of a ramjet and a scramjet engine. Give brief note 10
about each section.
