Programme: B.Tech.
Department: CE/ CSE/ ME/ ECE/ Tutorial sheet no: 2
EE/ CHE/ METALLURY Semester: I
Course Title: Introduction to Mechanical Systems
Course Code: 22 MET 101
Unit/ Title: Internal combustion engines
Learning Objective: To carry out the thermodynamic analysis of various power cycles for reciprocating
engines, and to find the thermal performance of the engines.

1. Engine of a car has four cylinders of 70mm bore and 75mm stroke. If the compression ratio is
8, determine the cubic capacity of the engine and clearance volume of each cylinder.
2. Compression ratio and maximum temperature of an air standard diesel cycle is 14 and 2500 K
respectively. If pressure and temperature at the start of compression stroke is 1 bar and 300 K
respectively, determine the cut-off ratio and thermal efficiency of the cycle. Take γ=1.4
3. In an Otto cycle, air pressure at the end of compression is 15 times the initial value and initial
temperature is 38 oC. If maximum temperature is limited to 1950 oC, find (i) Compression ratio
(ii) Thermal efficiency (iii) Work done per kg of air. For air, γ=1.4 & R=287 J/kg K.
4. Bore and stroke of a four cylinder petrol engine is 250mm and 375mm respectively. The initial
pressure and temperature of the working fluid is 1 bar and 47 oC. If the maximum pressure is
limited to 25 bar and total clearance volume of the engine is 0.01052 m3, determine (i) Air
standard efficiency (ii) Mean effective pressure. Take γ=1.4
