PART – A ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS (10 x 2 = 20 Marks)

1. What is meant by IC engine?


2. What are the main components of IC engine?
3. State the functions of push rod and rocker arm.
4. Name the basic thermodynamic cycles of the two types of internal combustion reciprocating engines.
5. What do you mean by scavenging in IC engines?
6. Define the following terms: (a) Clearance Volume and (b) Swept volume.
7. Define the term brake power.
8. Describe briefly the determination of friction power.
9. List the various parameters involved in engine performance.
10. Differentiate between brake power and indicated power of an IC engine.

11. (a). Explain the working principle of 4 stroke engine.

15. (a) A Single cylinder 4 stroke oil engine works on diesel cycle. The following readings were taken when the
engine was running at full load: Area of the indicator diagram = 3 cm 2, length of the diagram = 4 cm, spring constant
= 10 bar/cm, speed of the engine = 400 rpm, load on the brake = 380 N, spring balance reading = 50 N, diameter of
the brake drum = 120 cm, fuel consumption = 2.8 kg/h, calorific value of the fuel = 42000 kJ/kg, diameter of the
cylinder = 16 cm, stroke of the piston = 20 cm. Find (a) frictional power of the engine, (b) mechanical efficiency, (c)
brake thermal efficiency and (d) brake mean effective pressure.

(b) The following details were noted in a test on a four – cylinder, four stroke engine, diameter = 100mm; stroke =
120mm; speed of the engine = 1600rpm; fuel consumption = 0.2kg/min; fuel calorific value = 44,000 kJ/kg;
difference in tension on either side of the brake pulley = 40kgf; brake circumference is 300cm. If the mechanical
efficiency is 80%, calculate the (i) brake thermal efficiency (ii) indicated thermal efficiency (iii) indicated mean
effective pressure and (iv) brake specific fuel consumption.

16.(a). A test on a single cylinder 4 stroke oil engine having bore of 180 mm and stroke of 360mm gave the following
results. Speed = 290 rpm, brake torque = 392 Nm, IMEP = 7.2 bar, oil consumption = 3.5kg/h, coolant flow = 270
kg/h, cooling water temperature rise = 360C, air fuel ratio by weight = 25, Exhaust gas temperature = 415 0C, room
temperature = 210C. The fuel has a calorific value with 45200 kJ/kg. Take the specific heat of the exhaust gases as
1.005 kJ/kgK. Calculate the (i) indicated thermal efficiency and (ii) draw up a heat balance sheet in kJ/min basis.

(b). The following observations were taken during a test on a single cylinder four stroke cycle engine having a bore
of 250mm and stroke of 400mm. Ambient air temperature = 20 0C, Fuel consumption = 12kg/hr, CV of fuel =
43000kJ/kg, Engine speed = 300 rpm, Mean effective pressure = 6.5 bar, Net brake load = 1.2kN, Brake drum
diameter =2m, quantity of jacket cooling water = 600kg/hr, temperature of entering cooling water = 22 0C, temperature
of leaving cooling water = 650C, Quantity of air measured = 220 kg/hr, specific heat of exhaust gas = 405 0C, rope
diameter = 2cm. Determine indicated power, brake power, mechanical efficiency and draw a heat balance sheet on
hour basis.
