GROUP II Marks: 5 x 10 = 50

11. A certain engine can be represented by an air standard Otto cycle. At the beginning of
the compression stroke the pressure and temperature in the cylinder are 100 kPa and
17oC respectively. The volume at BDC is 2 litres and the compression ratio is 8:1.
Determine the pressure and temperature of the gas at the end of the compression
stroke. If the temperature of the gas at the end of the constant volume heat addition is
1700 K, determine how much heat was added during the constant volume process.
12. The following readings were taken during the test of a single cylinder four stroke oil
engine: Cylinder diameter = 250 mm; Stroke length = 400 mm, Gross m.e.p. = 7 bar;
Pumping m.e.p. = 0.5 bar, Engine speed = 250 r.p.m; Net load on the brake = 1080 N;
Effective diameter of the brake = 1.5 m; Fuel used per hour = 10 kg; Calorific value of
fuel = 44300 kJ/kg. Calculate: (i) Indicated power (ii) Brake power (iii) Mechanical
efficiency (iv) Indicated thermal efficiency.

13. A liquid fuel has 86% C and 14% H2 by mass. During combustion actual air supplied is
10% less than the theoretically required for complete combustion. Obtain the volumetric
composition of dry flue gases considering that all hydrogen gets burnt and carbon gets
burnt to form carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide with no free carbon left. Also find the
loss of calorific value.
14. A single acting reciprocating air compressor has two stages with the optimum and
perfect intercooling in between. Compressor has air sucked at 1 bar and at the rate of
2.4 m3/min when measured at 1.013 bar, 288 K. Compressor delivers air at 70 bar.
Temperature at the end of suction stroke is 32°C. The compression and expansion
follows polytropic process PV1.25 = C uniformly. The clearance volume is 3% of swept
volume in each HP and LP cylinder. Compressor runs at 750 rpm. If the mechanical
efficiency is 0.85 then determine the power of drive required, swept volumes of each
cylinder, % saving in power as compared to single stage compression within limits.
15. Discuss on CRDI system in detail.
16. Explain the engine cooling system with its sub components.

GROUP - III Marks : 1 x 20 = 20

17. In an IC engine using air as working fluid, total 1700 kJ/kg of heat is added during
combustion and maximum pressure in cylinder does not exceed 5 MPa. Compare the
efficiency of following two cycles used by engine: (a) cycle in which combustion takes
place isochorically. (b) cycle in which half of heat is added at constant volume and half at
constant pressure. Temperature and pressure at the beginning of compression are
100ºC and 103 kPa. Compression and expansion processes are adiabatic. Specific heat
at constant pressure and volume are 1.003 kJ/kg · K and 0.71 kJ/kg · K
18. During trial of a four cylinder four stroke petrol engine running at full load it has speed of
1500 rpm and brake load of 250 N when all cylinders are working. After some time each
cylinder is cut one by one and then again brought back to same speed of engine. The
brake readings are measured as 175 N, 180 N, 182 N and 170 N. The brake drum radius
is 50 cm. The fuel consumption rate is 0.189 kg/min with the fuel whose calorific value is
43 MJ/kg and A/F ratio of 12. Exhaust gas temperature is found to be 600ºC. The cooling
water flows at 18 kg/min and enters at 27ºC and leaves at 50ºC. The atmospheric air
temperature is 27ºC. Take specific heat of exhaust gas as 1.02 kJ/kg K. Determine the
brake power output of engine, its indicated power and mechanical efficiency. Also draw a
heat balance on per minute basis.
