THÊM ĐUÔI “-ED” VÀO SAU ĐỘNG TỪ CÓ QUY TẮC
Thông thường ta thêm “ed” vào sau động từ
 Ví dụ: catch – catched, turn – turned, need – needed
Động từ tận cùng là “e” → chỉ cần thêm “d”
 Ví dụ: type – typed, smile – smiled, agree – agreed
Động từ có MỘT âm tiết, tận cùng là MỘT phụ âm, trước phụ âm là MỘT nguyên âm → ta nhân đôi
phụ âm cuối rồi thêm “-ed”.
 Ví dụ: stop – stopped, shop – shopped, tap – tapped
Động từ có HAI âm tiết, tận cùng là MỘT phụ âm, trước phụ âm là MỘT nguyên âm, trọng âm rơi vào
âm tiết thứ HAI → ta nhân đôi phụ âm cuối rồi thêm “-ed”.
 Ví dụ: commit – committed, prefer – preferred
NGOẠI LỆ: travel – travelled / traveled  
Động từ tận cùng là “y”:
- Nếu trước “y” là MỘT nguyên âm (a,e,i,o,u), ta thêm “ed”.
Ví dụ: play – played, stay – stayed
- Nếu trước “y” là phụ âm (còn lại) ta đổi “y” thành “i + ed”.
Ví dụ: study – studied, cry – cried
Dấu hiệu nhận biết thì quá khứ đơn gồm:
Trong câu có các trạng từ chỉ thời gian trong quá khứ như: Yesterday (hôm qua), Ago (trước kia), Last week/
year/month (tuần/năm/tháng trước), In the past (trong quá khứ), the day before (ngày hôm trước)
Trong câu có những từ khoảng thời gian đã qua trong ngày như: Today (hôm nay), This morning/this
afternoon (vào buổi sáng/ buổi tối)
Quy tắc thêm ED vào sau động từ trong tiếng Anh
1.Theo quy tắc chung, chúng ta chỉ việc thêm ED vào sau động từ để thành lập dạng quá khứ.
Look → looked
Happen → happened
Work → worked
Start → started
Learn → learned
2.Những động từ tận cùng bằng E (câm), EE ta chỉ việc thêm D vào cuối động từ đó.
Smile → smiled
Change → changed
Advise → advised
Love → loved
Live → Lived
Agree → agreed
Believe → Believed
Invite → Invited
Like → liked
Move → moved
3.Động từ 1 âm tiết, kết thúc bằng “Nguyên âm + Phụ âm”.
Những động từ tận cùng bằng một phụ âm, trước đó có một nguyên âm (u, e, o, a, i), ta nhân đôi phụ âm rồi
thêm ED vào. Tuy nhiên, với động từ kết thức bằng phụ âm h, w, y, x thì ta chỉ thêm “ED” mà không gấp đôi
phụ âm.
Stop → stopped
Hug → hugged
Rub → rubbed
Fit → Fitted
Plan → Planned
Nhưng nếu phụ âm cuối là h, w, y, x thì chỉ thêm ED:
Stay → stayed
Play → played
Allow → allowed
Follow → followed
4.Động từ 2 âm tiết kết thúc bằng “nguyên âm + phụ âm”, trọng âm ở vần cuối
Với những động từ có 2 vần, với trọng âm ở vần cuối, tận cùng là “một nguyên âm + một phụ âm”, ta “gấp đôi
phụ âm” cuối và thêm ED vào sau động từ.
Prefer → preferred
Permit → permitted
Transfer → transferred
Stop → stopped
Travel → travelled
Nhưng động từ 2 âm tiết có kết thúc “nguyên âm + phụ âm”, mà trọng âm ở vần đầu (không phải vần cuối như
trường hợp ở trên), thì ta chỉ thêm ED vào cuối mà không gấp đôi phụ âm.
Enter → entered
Listen → listened
5.Động từ tận cùng bằng “Phụ âm + Y”
Với những động từ tận cùng bằng chữ “Y” dài, trước đó là “một phụ âm”, thì ta phải đổi “Y” dài thành “i”
ngắn, và thêm “ED” vào cuối động từ.
Try → tried
Deny → denied
Carry → carried
Hurry → hurried
Study → Studied
Worry → Worried
Marry → Married
Tuy nhiên, nếu trước “Y” là một nguyên âm (a, o, u, i, e) thì ta chỉ thêm ED như bình thường mà không thay
đổi “Y”:

6.Đối với động từ bất quy tắc, động từ đổi sang thì quá khứ không theo quy tắc ở trên:

Phát âm đuôi ED chuẩn xác nhất
1.Đọc thành /t/ với trường hợp thêm ED mà động từ có âm cuối kết thúc là /k/, /p/, /t/ /s/, /f/, /ʃ/, /tʃ/ (thường
chữ cái cuối là p, k, gh, s, sh, ch…)
Stop /stɒp/ →  stopped /stɒpt/
Hope → hoped /həʊpt/
2.Đọc thành /id/ với trường hợp thêm ED mà động từ có âm cuối là kết thúc là âm /t/ hoặc /d/ (thường có
chữ cái cuối là T và D)

3.Đọc thành /d/ với trường hợp thêm ED cho động từ có âm cuối là các âm hữu thanh còn lại như /b/, /v/,
/z/, /m/, /n/, /η/, /l/, /r/, /g/, /ʒ/, /dʒ/, /ð/, hoặc kết thúc bằng nguyên âm u, e, a, o, i.
