LOOKING BACK
To help you understand the lesson on length of confidence interval and sample
size determination, let us analyze first the concept of estimating the population mean.

An experiment was conducted by the Lighthouse Company in the life
expectancy of their LED light bulb product. A random sample of 40 LED bulbs was
tested. The bulbs revealed an average life expectancy of 350 hours and a standard
deviation of 15 hours.
a. Construct a 95% confidence interval for the true mean of the LED bulb.
b. Suppose the bulb company is claiming that their LED bulb has an average
life expectancy of 353 hours. Do you think their claim is valid?

BRIEF INTRODUCTION
The length of a confidence interval (LCI) is the absolute difference between the
upper confidence limit (UCL) and the lower confidence limit (LCL).
I. To find the length of a confidence interval for population, use the formula:
𝐿𝐶𝐼 = 𝑈𝐶𝐿 − 𝐿𝐶𝐿
II. To find the length of the confidence interval when the population proportion,
sample size, and the confidence level are given, we use the formula:
𝑝̂ • 𝑞̂
𝐿𝐶𝐼 = 2𝑧𝑎 √
2 𝑛
III. To find the length of the confidence interval when 𝜎, n, and the confidence
level are given, use the formula:
𝜎
𝐿𝐶𝐼 = 2𝑧𝑎
2 √𝑛
IV. To find the length of the confidence interval when s, n, and the confidence
level are given, use the formulaa:
𝑠
𝐿𝐶𝐼 = 2𝑡𝑎
2 √𝑛
V. To determine the sample size for population proportion (p) when a sample
proportion (𝑝̂ ) is known, use the formula:
[𝑧𝑎 ] 𝑝̂ • 𝑞̂
2
𝑛=
𝑒2
VI. To determine the sample size for population proportion (p) when a sample
proportion (𝑝̂ ) is unknown, use the formula:
2
0.25 [𝑧𝑎 ]
2
𝑛=
𝑒2

Examples
a. Given: 0.323 < p < 0.432. Find the length of the confidence interval.
Solution: Use the formula: 𝐿𝐶𝐼 = 𝑈𝐶𝐿 − 𝐿𝐶𝐿
= 0.432 – 0.323
= 0.109

e. According to the study conducted last year, 32.2% of students in your school
used Facebook. This year, your teacher wants you to conduct a similar study
on the current percentage of Facebook users among your schoolmates. How
many students must you include in your study to be 95% confident so that the
margin of error is no more than 3.3%?
Solution:
Given: 𝑝 = 32.2%, 𝑒 = 3.3%
𝑝 = 32.2% 𝑒 = 3.3%

Find 𝛼 in (1 − 𝛼)100% confidence level then find 𝑧𝑎 .

1 − 𝛼 = 0.95
𝛼 = 0.05
𝑎 0.05

Thus, the number of students that should be included in the study is 771.
Note:
If the computed sample size is not a positive integer, it should be rounded up to
the next positivve integer.
