Name: Strand and Section: ________

Activity I
A. Directions: Identify if the given statement is True or False. Write T if true, otherwise
write F.

1. In estimating the population mean, it is better to have a larger confidence

interval than a smaller interval.
2. The width of the confidence interval is the difference of the upper and lower
limits.
3. The higher the level of confidence used in the estimation process, the wider the
length of the confidence interval.
4. Point estimates are preferred than the interval estimate.
5. When X = 120 and n = 406, then the value of ̂ is 0.30 .
6. In the formula for the computation of the limits of the interval estimate, the lower
limit corresponds to the value ̅ ( √ )
7. When the margin of error is small, the confidence level is high.
8. The larger the sample size used in setting the interval estimate, the narrower
the resulting confidence interval will be.
9. A 90 % confidence level corresponds to a 10% margin of error.
10. The difference between the estimate and the parameter being estimated is
called standard error.

B. Direction: Consider the following situations and complete each of the given statements.
Situation 1: A professor of a renowned university conducted a research to determine the IQ
of the students in their university. The report shows that the chosen sample of students have
a mean of 110 with a standard deviation of 8. Moreover, the population mean is expected to
be in between 107.9 to 112.1 at 99 % confidence interval.
It can be observed that:
a. The point estimate for the population mean is
b. The degree of confidence is %
c. The margin of error is %
d. The interval estimate for the population mean is .
e. The length of the interval estimate for the population mean is .

Situation 2: The running time (in minutes) of a sample of you tube videos produced by a
particular vlogger are as follows: 12, 13.5, 15, 11, 18
A 95 % confidence interval for the mean running time of all the videos produced by the
vlogger is between 11.5 min to 16.30 min.
It can be observed that:
a. The point estimate for the population mean is
b. The degree of confidence is %
c. The margin of error is %
d. The interval estimate for the population mean is .
e. The length of the interval estimate for the population mean is .

Activity II
ESTIMATING THE MEAN OF NORMAL POPULATION WITH KNOWN VARIANCE

Direction: Read and analyze the given problem.

1. Based on the following information, find the maximum allowable margin of error for the
associated estimates if a 90 % confidence level is used. Interpret the results.
a. n = 50 & 2 = 36 b. n = 100 & 2 = 16

2. A random sample of 50 items is taken from a normally distributed population with a

sample mean of 200 and a population standard deviation of 23. Consider a 95 %
confidence interval.

a. Determine the point estimate for the population mean.

b. Compute a 95 % confidence interval for the population mean.

3. Supposed that the average length of sleeping time (in hours) of the employees in a
certain company is normally distributed with = 1.1. A sample of 25 employees were
interviewed and it was found out that the average sleeping time of these individuals is
7.5 hours.
a. Determine the point estimate for the population mean.
b. While n = 25, justify the use of z-distribution table in this problem.

c. Find the 99 % confidence interval of the average sleeping time of all the employees
of the company.

ESTIMATING THE POPULATION MEAN OF THE LARGE SAMPLE

Direction: Read, analyze and solve the given problem.

1. A random sample of 200 car owners in National Capital
Regionshows that a car is driven on the average of 12800
kilometers per year with a standard deviation of 1500
kilometers. Construct a 90 % confidence interval for the
average number ofkm a car is driven per year in National
Capital Region.

2. The mean length 𝜇 of time consumed in online classes per

dayof a Senior High School students would have to be
estimated. A sample of 100 students had a mean of 3.5
hours a day with asample standard deviation of 0.8 hour.
Construct a 95 % confidence interval for the 𝜇.

THINK MORE! Interpret the statement “I am 90 % confident that the interval

estimate contains 𝜇"

b. = 23, 𝛼 = 0.01, left-tailed test
c. 𝑑𝑓 = 20, 𝛼 = 0.05, two-tailed test
